The Highs and Lows: Friendology Guide #3

By Rachel Gomes-Casseres
March 7, 2012 - 6:55pm

Maybe I’ve been spending too much time studying quantum mechanics for my upcoming chem test, but I’ve come to the realization that friends are kind of like light waves. (Don’t worry—you won’t need to be a science buff to understand my metaphor.)

Like waves, friends have different levels of energy—some friends are high energy and are pretty happy, others are low energy and might be gloomier. In addition, their attitudes might vary in intensity. It’s great that friends come in as wide a spectrum as the electromagnetic spectrum, but when you and a friend are on different wavelengths, destructive interference is bound to occur.

If you’re like me, then sometimes Facebook and Twitter just doesn’t cut it any more. Oftentimes my wall activity on Facebook doesn’t change for over an hour and no one tweets on twitter. What to do? Create a Pinterest! What is pinterest you ask? Pinterest’s website describes the site as a place that “lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.”

Being Vegan at Brandeis

By Marissa Cecala
March 1, 2012 - 1:59pm

Being vegan at Brandeis University is widely misunderstood. Most students complain about the meal plan, but when you are a vegan, options are even more limited. Many of my fellow vegans at Brandeis simply get off of the meal plan immediately by either moving off campus or living in a dorm with a kitchen. I feel most bad for freshmen that are vegans, because they began school believing the false premise that Brandeis caters to vegans. The reality is that there is only one vegan station out of all the food options on campus. It is located in lower Usdan and is closed on the weekends. (Because vegans do not eat on Saturday and Sunday?) READ MORE

Dear Abby: Friendless in College

By Betty Revah
February 16, 2012 - 6:31pm

Dear Abby,
Last semester was my first semester in college. My biggest fear was not making any friends so I became best friends with the first girl I met during orientation even though we had nothing in common. After orientation I made more friends and I was having a lot of fun, but my best friend never made any other friends. She was mad at me when I hung out with other people so I introduced her to two of my closest friends. They immediately clicked, made their own group and left me out of it. Every time I see them together I feel like crying, now I'm the one who doesn't have any friends. How should I handle this?

Must-see Oscar-worthy Movies to Watch Over Break

By Sarah Binstok
February 16, 2012 - 2:08pm

Now that your hectic midterms week is over with and you’re back at home with some time to kill, why not spend your break watching ALL the movies nominated for the upcoming Oscars? I for one look forward to a movie marathon once my tush finds the couch of my living room. Don’t know what movies are nominated for Oscars? Well me either. As college students we don’t really feel the need to wander off campus to see the latest feature film for a crazy Saturday night. So for those of you who haven’t seen a movie since your family went to the movies on Christmas day, here’s the scoop on the ones you should watch before February 26th. The following movies are nominated for Best Picture: READ...

Friendology Guide #2: So Close Yet So Far

By Rachel Gomes-Casseres
February 16, 2012 - 1:42pm

Even on a campus as small as Brandeis, you probably have a friend that feels so distant. You enjoy each other’s company but somehow her friendship seems just beyond your grasp. If this is the case for you then you’re in luck, because this week’s guide is all about dealing with those friends in hard-to-reach places.

The Study Buddy

Who is she?
She’s in one of your classes and you’ve been studying together all semester. Whenever there’s an exam or problem set, you rely on each other to learn the material. You’re productive when you study, but you also have a good time. Midterms aren’t so bad when she is around. But the second your test is over, she’s long gone.

Why is she like that?

It’s safe to say that for most of us at Brandeis, studying abroad is part of our college plan. But even with a study abroad plan in the works (or behind you), when Spring begins to peak through the clouds, the travel itch starts, and dreaming about a epic Euro-trip or an Australian adventure becomes a daily distraction when struggling through our oh-so-boring lectures. But planning a trip abroad can be scary, time consuming, and let's not forget--super expensive. Lucky for us, Her Campus has partnered with Contiki, the #1 travel company for young people, offering over 200 guided tours and pre-planned trips in 40+ countries, exclusively for 18-35-year-olds—all for amazingly low prices!...
