HC BRANDEIS PHOTOBLOG
Drink This NOT That
Thursday, February 9, 2012

Hands down, the best thing you can possibly do for your body is drink water! According to the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Geological Survey, “Up to 60% of the human body is water, the brain is composed of 70% water, and the lungs are nearly 90% water. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water by weight, as is the brain; body fat contains 10% water and bone has 22% water. About 83% of our blood is water, which helps digest our food, transport waste, and control body temperature. Each day humans must replace 2.4 litres of water, some through drinking and the rest taken by the body from the foods eaten."
Water is more important than many of us realize. I see so many of my fellow peers living off of Diet Coke and coffee and insist that those drinks are “good enough.” Although these drinks are nice to enjoy on occasion, water is still an absolute must!
When it comes to those times when we want to treat ourselves to a beverage aside from water (which in my opinion is completely underrated and deserves its own commercial with dancing penguins and flamingos like other drinks have) there are some options that are far better than others.

Drink Coke, not Diet Coke
Many of you are likely shocked and appalled by this suggestion, but I will explain my reasoning. Yes, a regular coke contains 143 calories and a diet coke contains only one calorie, however, if you look at the ingredients of these bubbly beverages, you will notice that aspartame gives Diet Coke its sweet flavor while regular Coke uses real sugar. Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, but is not good for the human body. Some side effects of aspartame include headaches, dizziness, mood changes, skin reactions, or weight gain. Weight gain?! How is that possible? Well, when the body is given something low calorie that tastes high calorie, it often begins to crave more food, which stimulates hunger. Stick with regular Coke whenever possible, or aim to reduce your Diet Coke consumption.

Drink Tea, not Coffee
Tea is a better option for so many reasons! First of all, tea will not stain your teeth unlike coffee that will. Secondly, coffee requires the addition of more milk and sugar than tea does. Thirdly, tea has less caffeine than coffee. Lastly, many studies have found that tea acts as a stress reliever because it contains tannins and catechins, which some studies have linked to cancer and heart disease prevention. Tea also lowers blood pressure. Personally, tea helps me feel calm, while coffee makes me a little jittery.

Drink Red Wine, not Beer
Multiple studies support a link between moderate red wine consumption (about 1 or 2 glasses a day) with improving health and extending life expectancy. Other studies found that “wine drinkers were younger, wealthier, less likely to smoke, and more physically fit than their beer or liquor-swigging counterparts” (MensHealth.com). I do not know about you, but I plan to stick with wine!
10 Easy Ways to Go Green!
Wednesday, February 1, 2012Let’s be honest here. I know I’m not the only one who feels that pang of guilt in my gut when I throw out a water bottle in the trash can or forget to turn off my lights when I leave my room. We all do these things far too often and it is my goal to make you ladies more aware about the actions you can take in order to help go green and preserve the environment. As president of SEA (Students for Environmental Action), it is my goal to help teach the Brandeis community about the different ways we can make a change in our daily lives and help make the campus a greener place. Below I have compiled a list of ten easy steps you can take in order to make a positive impact on the environment.

1. Don’t heat an empty room! As soon as you head out for classes, turn off your heater. Although it is nice to come home to a warm room, realistically it will take all of 10 minutes to get your room nice and toasty. Instead of wasting hours of heat, sacrifice 10 minutes of chilliness. That being said, if it is TOO hot in your room, opening a window while the heater is on truly makes zero sense. Just turn the heater down ladies…
2. Minimize your daily waste! This is a HUGE one. In Usdan, many of us grab the “to-go” containers and sit a few feet away from the cashier while chowing down. Although I definitely understand how awesome it is that with the to go container you get a pile of curly fries 2 feet higher than the normal serving, but now there is an eco friendly and better alternative! If you put down a deposit of just $5, you can use a plastic container that the dining hall wash for you when you are finished eating! You can pay in points for it, and could even keep one that you re-use for the whole semester (if you wash it yourself). You can pick up a container in the C-Store.

3. Meatless Mondays! If you take just one day out of your week to purposefully not eat meat, you will be significantly contributing to lessening the amount of fossil fuels used to churn out the meat you eat on a regular basis. Also, it is a much healthier alternative to reduce the amount of meat you eat, and doing so will also make you feel leaner. There are a ton of vegetarian options, so try them out for a day!
4. Laundry time! When you put your wash in the dryer, select “Bright Colors” instead of “Colors.” The wash cycle will use cold water rather than warm, and will save a ton of energy. Your clothes will be just as clean (I promise), and you’ll feel good knowing that you are helping save the world. Additionally, if you air-dry your clothes (particularly jeans) they won’t shrink and will last for much longer.

5. Re-usable bags! You know those ugly plastic bags everyone totes around on a regular basis? When you do so, people are undoubtedly judging you. So why not buy a cute and sustainable bag to tote around that you can keep tucked away in your backpack ready for use? Impromptu sprees at the c-store are a constant for all of us, so be smart and use a sturdy and fashionable bag that also won’t break!

6. Kill those vampires! No, not Bill/Erik from True Blood, or Stefan/Damien from the Vampire Diaries (I’m not at all embarrassed for making those references). Vampire is a term for plugs that are sucking energy unnecessarily. If you straighten your hair on a daily basis, or charge your phone religiously (as we all do) unplug them on your way out. You’ll burn an extra few calories leaning over twice a day, and will stop wasting a days worth of energy.
7. Use public transportation! Let’s be real. You’re at college, not too far from a metropolitan city filled with a ton to do, as well as the quaint town of Waltham that is home to many delicious restaurants. Utilize all of the resources offered to you – take the BranVan, the Crystal Shuttle, or even the computer rail. Yes, it is fun to have access to a car, don’t get me wrong, but carpooling is so much more energy efficient and communal. You never know, you could meet that special someone while heading into Boston for a flick.
8. Don’t use unnecessary water! At 8am (or even later for those of you lucked out this semester), it is really easy to sleepily stare at yourself in the mirror while allowing the water to run or space out in the shower for five minutes while thinking about the day. If you try to remember to only use water when needed (to wash away suds/toothpaste), you will save quite a few gallons of water on a regular basis.

9. Stop using plastic water bottles! This will save you time, money, and contribute greatly to minimizing your carbon footprint. The water inside of the bottles you purchase on a regular basis is truly no different than the tap water readily available from the faucet. Filling up your water bottle ten times saves you around $15 that you could spend elsewhere. If you really hate the taste of tap water get a bottle with a built in filter. It’s a no brainer!
10. Do it in the dark! I mean really guys; get your minds out of the gutter! Doing it in the dark can refer to any activity that really doesn’t require lights such as having meaningful conversations (it is easier to be more open with each other when expressions are not involved), giving/receiving massages (much more relaxing that way), listening to music, or best of all hosting a silent rave! If you’re really creative, I’m sure you can think of other things that require no light – use your imagination!
Come one, Come all to Her Campus Brandeis’s Bracelet Ball/Arm Party!
Wednesday, January 25, 2012Dear Reader,
You are cordially invited to our Arm Party that is happening right now in this very photoblog. Leandra Medine, creator of the legendary arm party and the lady behind the fabulous blog, The Man Repeller, defines an “arm party” as: “The act of outfitting one’s wrist in several fancy contents (e.g friendship bracelets, cuffs, leather wrap threads, multiple watches) that blend together in a dynamic way that screams ARM PARTY (sometimes redefined as a rager, soiree, gathering, fiesta, depending on the nature of said party.)” Medine’s eclectic and fabulous arm parties inspired us to get in on the action so HC Brandeis decided to host our own. Hope you enjoy our party/fiesta/bracelet ball (whatever you want to call it!) No RSVP required.

Cool Coats Around Campus
Thursday, December 15, 2011
Although the weather lately has been quite cold, collegiettes™ are not sacrificing their style when it comes to outerwear. Here are some chic coats that we have spotted around campus that are keeping ladies warm this New England winter.

The Skellig
Thursday, December 8, 2011 This past week, I went to the Skellig to unwind from the stress of finals with a couple of my friends. Though the Skellig has a fair amount food options – namely comfort and pub food, I usually go to the Skellig to enjoy a few drinks with my friends and some great soup to go with my drinks.

This pub is the perfect hang out for people looking for a bite to eat or a fun night over the weekend. The Skellig has a great dance floor and awesome musicians that come and perform on the weekends.

Her Campus Brandeis Does Black Friday
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
If there is one thing the writers here at Her Campus know how to do, it’s how to shop for amazing deals. So naturally, Black Friday is one of our favorite days of the year. Interested in how we did it? Editor-in-Chief Andrea Stern made sure she woke up early in order to beat the crowds at her local mall. “I woke up at 7:30 and was at the mall by 8. My best deals of the day were two striped cashmere sweaters from Bloomingdales that are not only comfortable and perfect for winter but also classic. This was one of the few times I went to a store with something particular in mind that I wanted to buy and actually found it- especially at such a major discount! It was definitely worth losing a couple hours of sleep in order to get them.”

Black Friday is an annual adventure for Shayna Straus. “I love Black Friday! I look forward to it every year. This year I went to Bloomingdales with my sister and we practically spent the whole day there. It was definitely crazy but I don’t think I’ll need to buy a new sweater for a few years!”

Yours truly also braved the insanity of Black Friday shopping at Bloomingdales. My goal was to find sweaters and pants that would keep me warm during the chilly New England months ahead. I was beyond happy when I found Aqua sweaters and J-Brand corduroys on sale. However, my best deal was a French Connection dress that I bought for nearly half the price. Although I didn’t wake up at the crack of dawn, my post-Thanksgiving shopping experience was ultimately a success. Now to start planning for next year!
