Morgan Gross ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Have you met Morgan Gross. Probably. She’s everywhere. Whether you’ve seen her in her awesome Fall Fest T-shirt or on stage at a “Voices of Soul” performance, you can’t but help warm up to her immediately. We at Her Campus thought she was the ideal Campus Celebrity so we sat down with her to get to know her a little better.

HC: You are involved in so many activities, but we always see your name on The Hoot. What do you do at The Hoot and what do you love about it?
Gross: I am the “opinions column” editor. Pretty much I edit opinion articles that students submit, read, edit, format, and then put into the paper in print. I especially like editing the opinions section because it’s sort of a forum for Brandeis students to put their work published. There’s something really cool about seeing your name in print on a newspaper. When I work on The Hoot I feel like I am accomplishing something. Overall, getting articles in on time is hectic but what I enjoy most is the great social bond between the paper staff.

HC: We also saw you running around during Fall Fest? What inspired you to help run the event and what was your favorite activity of the weekend?
Gross: I was a volunteer coordinator and I did it basically because I like to be involved in student activities. It’s very gratifying. When I see families enjoying the activities that I helped plan, I feel like I’m doing something good. I think one of the coolest parts of Fall Fest this year was the community service event that we planned. Cradles to Crayons (a non-profit in Boston) donated tons of fleece that families got to cut and make into blankets to be donated to the homeless all over Boston.

HC: We also hear that you are a member of “Voices of Soul.” There are so many a cappella groups on campus, why this one?
Gross: Well, we specialize in hip-hop, R&B and Soul music, which is great. We call Voices of Soul The Pantheon because almost every single Greek organization is represented. I also just got solos, which I’m really excited about.

HC: Are you performing anytime soon?
Gross: Yeah, actually. Were performing twice on the 10th of November at the philosophy coffeehouse and Baruch coffeehouse.

HC: What’s your favorite thing about Brandeis?
Gross: Everyone’s smart. Like you can just walk around, stop a random person and have a normal intellectual conversation with them. I hate small talk. I much rather have an interesting conversation than a dull, awkward one.

HC: What is your favorite hobby outside of all your activities?
Gross: I love cooking. I hate how there is no where to eat on campus on Friday nights so this weekend we’re cooking Chabat dinner and it’s going to be great. Italian food is my favorite to cook because I grew up watching my mom cook Italian and learned from her.

HC: What’s your favorite dish to cook?
Gross: Pasta with eggplant, tomatoes, and lots of garlic. You always need lots of garlic.

Andrea is a sociology major with minors in journalism and women's and gender studies. She is currently finishing her senior year at Brandeis University. She was born and reared in Los Angeles, CA, which does mean that she is a die-hard Laker fan… Sorry Bostonians. When Andrea is not routing on her favorite basketball team, she dedicates her time to her many passions. They include reading and writing about fashion, traveling, exploring new restaurants, spending time with friends, watching reality television (she has a weak spot for Bravo), shopping, and working out.
