Mitchell Beers ‘17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Year: 2017

Hometown: Upstate New York (Schroon Lake, Adirondack Park)

Major(s):  Biology (I’m pre-med)

Minor(s): Possibly French

Her Campus: Why Brandeis?

Mitchell Beers: Well, I’m from a really, really small town (less than 1,000 people, 19 kids in my graduating class, the works), so I knew I wanted to be in a more urban area; but when I visited urban campuses I didn’t really like that there wasn’t a real campus, it was just buildings amongst the city. Then there’s Brandeis: I like it because of the good academics, the social justice aspect and the community in general; plus, it’s in a good location (Boston is very accessible).

HC: What’s the best thing about being a midyear? The worst?

MB: The best part is that it’s a lot easier getting to know everyone because there are less of us (plus I went to London, which was awesome), so I feel like I know most of them pretty well (whereas if I wasn’t a midyear, and had started in August, I feel like it would’ve been harder getting to know people and becoming close with them). I like all of it, but if I had to pick, the worst part is probably trying to integrate with the other first years because we kind of already established our friend groups (but I also know that there are other first years, and students in general, that I want to meet and be friends with).

HC: You were recently elected Midyear Senator for the Student Union, what prompted you to run and what contributions are you hoping to make during your time as the Midyear rep?

MB: Well I’ve always been involved in student council and I know there are flaws within the midyear system (i.e., some of the midyears I know didn’t have a great experience before coming to Brandeis because they didn’t have good pre-arrival advising) and I want to better the system so that every midyear is content to be a midyear!

HC: Do you want to be involved in politics as a career? If not, what’s your dream job?

MB: Though I like being able to make positive changes, I don’t want to be involved in politics as a career (I actually don’t really follow politics that much). My dream job is to be a doctor, specifically a Pediatric Cardiologist.

HC: What else are you involved in or want to be involved in on campus?

MB: So far, I’m not involved in too much. As a senator I’m involved in the social justice committee, but because it’s my first semester I want to take it easy and adjust to college life (focusing on classes and being a good midyear rep); eventually though, I want to play intramural soccer and get involved in the theatre scene on campus.
