Her Campus: I heard you are part of the Ballet Club at Brandeis. What made you interested in Ballet?
Maya Lieberman: I was the Ballet Club President- I am passing it off as I am going abroad next semester, but I have been dancing ballet and other styles of dance since I was four.  We offer beginner and intermediate classes and we even perform, so come by on Sundays 1-2 (Beginner) or 2-3:30 (Intermediate) every Sunday to come by Gosman dance studio to try it out, all levels welcome!  The teacher is spectacular and used to teach at the Boston Ballet!

HC: You work in Boston teaching dance to children. How did you become involved? Is it something you want to pursue in the future?
ML: I work with the Boston Ballet’s Education and Community Initiatives Department and have had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for two of the programs in Boston Public Schools.  One program is a dance class for middle school boys, Taking Steps: Boys in Motion, which gives young men the opportunity to experience movement and to perform at the Strand Theater with the Boston Ballet.  Half of the boys are football players, and all of them have grown so much through this program which they have all chosen to be a part of.  The other program is called Citydance, and I am a part of a team that gives third grade classrooms in the Boston and North Shore area the Chance to Dance!  We host interactive dance workshops in Boston Public School classrooms and provide free dance classes to selected students.  This year is the 21st year of the program and we have far exceeded expectations of the amount of students receiving this amazing opportunity! I want to work with children through dance therapy as a career, so I am so grateful to be apart of the Boston Ballet family and to allow children to experience dance through these extraordinary programs.

HC: Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
ML: I’m studying abroad in Haifa in about one month!

HC: What is your favorite movie and TV show?
ML: The Parent Trap- I have it memorized. Ugly Betty is classic.

HC: What is your favorite class taken at Brandeis?
ML: Introduction to Social Policy with Laura Lorenz.

HC: Do you have any pet peeves?
ML: When people chew loudly… especially gum during test. ugh.
