Her Campus: What activities are you involved in at Brandeis?

Lauren Nadeau: So I’m involved in Women Incorporated (WINC).  I’m the vice president.  I’m also part of the Waltham Group.  I’m a coordinator for Prospect Hill Kids Club.  And I work at Phonathon.

HC: Can you tell us a little bit more about WINC and Prospect Hill Kids Club?

LN: Prospect Hill is a new collaborative effort between Bentley, Waltham Housing Authority, and the Waltham Police and Fire Department.  We combine efforts to run an afterschool program at the Prospect Hill Community Center.  We serve about forty kids who come for an hour of tutoring and an hour of physical activity everyday.  And then WINC is Brandeis’ women and business club.  It’s modeled after a lot of women and business clubs at Harvard and big business schools across the country.  What we do is we hold alternate weeks of networking and discussion opportunities for girls to come in and learn about how to use tools such as LinkedIn and resources such as Hiatt. WINC is a new club, we started last year, and we hope to grow!

HC: What’s your favorite Brandeis moment?

LN: Hmm, favorite Brandeis moment.  Ooh that’s a hard one! I have so many of them its hard to pick one.  Ok, I have one.  There was a morning last year; I got up really early with all of my friends to see our friend Chloë play hockey.  We got to go with her hockey team and load up into vans at like seven in the morning.  They won that game against BU, and then we all came back and went to breakfast together.  That was our first experience during freshman year of us all coming together to support one of our friends.  That was the moment that I realized that I had made really good friends here at Brandeis.

HC: Do you have any advice for the first years and midyears?

LN:  Yes! I was really nervous coming to a new school.  I came from a small, all girls private school.  One of the hardest things coming here was feeling like I was never going to fit in like I did at my old school.  But the best thing you can do is just stay true to yourself and trust who you are.  There are going to be people here that will love you for who you are.  By staying true to myself, staying open, and keeping a smile on my face, I made some of the best friends in the world.  So my advice would be to just never lose sight of that.

HC: What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t had the chance?

LN: I worked for a non-profit called World Connect, and one of their subdivisions is Kids Connect. I was on the youth board of directors for Kids Connect.  We would approve grants for projects that get funded through the Peace Core in the developing world. And I haven’t had a chance to, but I’ve always wanted to go and visit one of the projects and see what impact their making in the community.

HC:  If you could get on a plane right now and go anywhere in the world, where would you go and who would you take with you?

LN: I would go to Paris and I would take my little sister Megan because we’re really close.  And I would take a big group of my best friends on a private jet! Yeah, we would go on a private jet and ride in style to Paris.  The first thing we would do when we get there is see the Eiffel Tower.

HC: what’s one thing you’re looking forward to this semester?

LN: So, over April break, I’m looking forward to going to Long Island to visit my friends.  My roommate Sara is staying instead of going back to California. I’m going up to our other friend Sarah’s house with her and we’re going to spend a weekend there.
