September at Brandeis was a month full of discussion panels, theatre performances, club open houses, oh and let’s not forget, shortened school weeks. The scattered holiday season proved to be a time of community festivities, weekends spent on an Amtrak train home, and food- tons and tons of food. Now that midterm season is in full swing, Mondays have officially rejoined the work week! Here are a few tips on how to conquer a full week of classes.
1.Plan ahead and stay organized
While we all like to believe that we can memorize and remember our entire class, work, and club schedule, this is an added memory strain and stress that you can avoid by quickly jotting down the upcoming week’s activities in a planner, on a wall calendar, or on your phone.
2. Incentivize yourself
Treat yourself at the end of the long week to a trip off campus. Whether you take the bran van to Waltham for a quick dinner out or venture into Boston on a Saturday with a full itinerary, this outing will not only remind you of what’s to come at the end of your busy week, but will also allow you to decompress and prepare you for the next full week.
3. Find “you” time during the week
With back-to-back classes during the day and club meetings at night, you might feel suddenly overwhelmed. Utilize free time between classes to watch you favorite TV show, enjoy a brief workout (endorphins, anyone?), or have a catnap. This will help revamp your mind, reorganize your thoughts, and allow you to conquer the rest of your day.
4. Call mom and dad
Talking out your full schedule and any concerns that you might have with maintaining it can be incredibly helpful. Tell your parents what you have in store for this week and this might remind you that the week ahead may not be so bad after all.
5. Avoid procrastination
It can be all too easy to leave tedious readings to the end of the week and even easier to expect yourself to catch up on them with an evening in the library. Often, events and other distractions will arise leaving you to further put off work. Plus, falling behind on readings can interrupt your getting ahead on the following week’s assignments. You’re sure to avoid this frustrating cycle by prioritizing.
