Name: Gabby Potter
Year: 2018
Hometown: Bedford, New Hampshire
Major/Minor: Psychology with minors in Sexuality and Queer Studies and Peace, Conflict and Coexistence Studies
Her Campus: What attracted you to Brandeis?
Gabby Potter: My mom went to Brandeis, so I thought that I should check out the campus. But this is the story I like to tell people: we were in Admissions about to take a tour, and there was one yearbook on the table—the one from my mom’s senior year. It was kind of weird, and I don’t know if I believe in signs, but that was really cool. Then I walked around a little bit and I was like, “I can be here. I can do this.”
HC: What activities are you involved in on campus?
GP: I’m a counselor at the Queer Resource Center on campus, and I’m the Communications Coordinator for Trisk, which is Brandeis’ LGBTQ+ social group. I’m also involved in Ripple Effect, and I teach Zumba classes at Gosman on Mondays (5-6pm), Wednesdays (6-7pm), and Fridays (5:30-6:30pm).
HC: What are your goals for the new school year?
GP: Academically, I want to do as best as I can. But more so my goals are to get more sleep—I’m striving for 6 or 7 hours a night. I’m also going to try to be better at self-care: I want to make sure that I’m checking in with myself before I’m expending my energy to 400 million different things. I love everything I do, but I have to make sure to take care of myself, too.
HC: What’s your advice for incoming freshmen?
GP: Try a lot of things and only go back to the things that hooked you. I know that I got really involved and then there were 15 million people counting on me. Then I decided to cut back, and I was I left with things that I was really passionate about.
HC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
GP: I want to be a psychologist, so I’m hoping to have some schooling under my belt. I also hope that at that point I’ll have been able to figure out who I am and who I want to be. Also, I hope that I’ll be better at cooking, because right now it’s kind of a struggle.
