Family Holiday Photos Hits and Misses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

The holiday season means group photos and dressing kids up in cute dresses and fancy outfits. It seems like starting Thanksgiving all the holiday cards start popping up in the mail. When doing family pictures, there are definitely some unspoken rules and definite misses.

1)   Do not put the entire family in the exact same outfit. Putting the little cousins or siblings in a matching holiday sweater is cute, but it will not look the same on your grandfather as it does on a three year old.

2)   Do not go overboard on the holiday theme. Holiday colors are cute. Holiday icons on sweaters can be adorable. Making yourselves look like presents, pumpkins or some other holiday icon might be eye catching but probably not so flattering for your family.

3) Santa pictures might not always be the cutest holiday card image. If your child does not like Santa or characters dressed up, the chances are they will not be amenable to taking a picture with him. They might even cry or look terrified. You can probably snag a cuter picture when they are comfortable at home.

4) Any picture that involves getting undressed. This is just a bad idea. It is not cute and don’t do it. We understand your desire to show off your handsome family. Maybe rethink your idea if it shows off anything else besides that.

Here are some definite hits for family pictures this holiday season!

1) Coordinate the colors. In order for a family picture to look organized, planned but not too over the top coordinate colors. Wear similar tones or mix and match colors.

2) Pick a neutral background and complimenting colors. The last thing you want is for your kids or yourself to look like a highlighter. Reds, blacks and white are great go-to colors for any picture you take during the holiday season.

3) Comfort is key. If you want the picture to come out good and your kids to look like they are having a good time, do it somewhere they feel comfortable.
