Beyond the Brandeis Bubble: Breakfast at Flour Bakery + Cafe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

A recent visit from my dad and youngest sister meant two things: I needed clean my room and, more importantly, I had to find find a stellar bakery in Boston to take them. You see, my dad has the ultimate pastry pallate and I needed to find a place that would impress his practiced taste buds and eager stomach.  My work was cut out for me, but after some Internet research, I found that Flour Bakery + Cafe would be my best bet.  Flour Bakery + Cafe has several different locations around the city, and we settled for their South End location, as it was just a stone’s throw from my sister’s campus tour at Northeastern.

Though it was only eight in the morning, the intimate cafe area was already crowded, and a line consisting of cafe-goers snaked along the pastry counter.  A menu hung above the counter.  I decided to test out Flour Bakery’s version of chair tea. And after a quick peek at the pretty pastries displayed at the pastry counter, I settled on trying one of the yummy looking sticky buns.  After giving my order to my dad and sister I went to claim a spot in the cafe area. It wasn’t long until I was able to snag a table. Minutes later my family arrived bearing sticky buns and steaming beverages. My sticky bun was incredible. Not too try, perfectly sweet, with a good abundance of crunchy nuts and chewy caramel sauce over the top. Additionally, it recieved a stamp of approval from my dad. My chai tea was equally satisfactory. However, my sister’s hot chocolate was somewhat watery and overall, mediocre.

A couple weeks later when I returned on my own, this time to their Caimbridge location, it became clear that pastry is what you go Flour Bakery + Cafe for. This time I decided to try their pan aux raisins, and almond brioche pastry, and a lemon scone. All three lived up to the standard of the sticky bun I had tried before.

Flour Bakery + Cafe also offers a selection of sandwiches on their savory menu.  If their pastry is any indication, I know I can look forward to a satisfactory lunch at Flour Bakery + Cafe sometime soon.
