6 Things Students Wish They Knew as a Brandeis Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

“If you don’t find a group of friends right away, don’t sweat it. The first week of school, I hadn’t made any friends and I was really worried. It took me a while, but now I live with three of my best friends.” Marc Siegel, Politics and Business Major

“Make sure that the classes you take align with the major you want. I spent my first year taking classes solely based on how much fun I thought that they would be, even though I knew what I wanted to do. Don’t waste valuable time on classes you don’t need” Jack Fox, Creative Writing and Politics Major

“Don’t be afraid to spend time alone. My first few months at Brandeis, I was so concerned about making friends that I would feel guilty if I spent time alone in my room. Especially if you’re introverted, it can be beneficial to take a break from socializing. Take some alone time when you need it.” Lily Elderkin, Women’s and Gender Studies and Sociology Major

“Stay hydrated! Always drink water before parties, before working out, and between classes.” Marc Siegel, Politics and Business Major

“Make sure to do something that you have never done before. College is a chance to start fresh and develop new interests. You can join an interesting club, take a class in something you’ve never studied, or make friends with someone who you wouldn’t have spent time with in high school. Even if you don’t end up sticking with it, you should at least try as many new things as possible.” Katarina Weessies, English and Politics Major

“Don’t be ashamed if you don’t know what you want to do with your life just yet. It’s normal not to know what your plans are early on in college.” Jose Castellanos, Politics and History Major

Katarina is a sophomore at Brandeis University. She is an English and Politics Double Major who loves hiking, writing, and frozen yogurt. When she is not showing off her useless knowledge at Brandeis Quiz Bowl Team practice, you can find her reading about feminism in the library, petting dogs, or attempting to play guitar
