10 Ways to Celebrate Fall 2014 in Boston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

We’ve compiled a list of ten activities to help embrace the changing leaves in and around Boston. There’s something for everyone! Check it out!

1. Go apple picking! Celebrate New England Fall in one of the most quintessential and college budget-friendly ways. To find an orchard near you visit http://www.bostonmagazine.com/arts-entertainment/blog/2014/09/19/apple-picking-orchards-near-boston/

2. Go to Fashion Week! You don’t have to be in NYC to feel like a fashionista next to some of the runway’s biggest names. Enjoy shows, exhibitions, and parties with Boston’s fashion professionals, retailers, and design students from October 5th to 11th at the Mandarin Oriental, Copley Place, and the new Revere Hotels in downtown Boston. For more information visit http://www.bostonfashionweek.com

3. Head down to Boston Common’s Frog Pond for the Boston Halloween Pumpkin Festival on Sunday October 27th! For more information see http://www.bostonfrogpond.com/2013/10/halloween-happenings/

4. For anyone with a Zipcar membership or their own set of wheels, head down to Rhode Island (about an hour away from Brandeis) for Providence’s Water Fire Festival! For more information see http://waterfire.org

5. For those who are over 21, the South Boston Waterfront hosts a German-style Octoberfest from October 3rd to 4th, which will feature three stages with live music, an abundant selection of Harpoon beers and ales, and lots of German food sold by a local restaurant. For more information see http://www.harpoonbrewery.com/festivals/12/Harpoon-Octoberfest.

6. For sport lovers, the 2014 Head of the Charles Regatta will take place on the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge on October 18th and 19th between 8AM- 4:30PM. The race is free for spectators, and the participants consist of over 8,000 athletes from around the world.

7. For the booklovers among us, the 2014 Boston Book Festival takes place October 23rd – 25th in Copley Square and features more than 200 presentations, a street fair, workshops for aspiring authors, an outdoor music stage, and more!

8. On Sundays, South Boston hosts its weekly “SoWa” market, which features several sections including a vintage market, food truck bazaar, farmer’s market, and an crafts and art market – showcasing handmade goods and products by local small business owners. SoWa is located south of Washington Street at 460 Harrison Ave, and is open Sundays, May through October, 10AM – 4PM.

9. Take a stroll through Harvard’s beautiful Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain to admire the Boston Fall foliage. Admission is free and the landscape is open sunrise to sunset every day – which is a great opportunity for all the landscape painters out there to make some masterpieces – at 125 Arborway, Boston Massachusetts (easily accessible via the Orange Line).

10. Finally, when the temperature gets cold enough, grab some friends and head to Boston Common for a skate on the famous Frog Pond. The rink opens November 19th (assuming the temps get cold enough). Adult admission is $4 per person and $8 for skate rentals.
