J Crew Fall 2012: A Review

By Marissa Alioto
July 28, 2012 - 8:51pm

Here's my take on J Crew's Lookbook for fall, and the best way to adapt individual pieces to campus. All items from outside of the Lookbook, unless otherwise noted, are sourced from their original brand via RompBomp. 1. The best thing about this look is the fabulous turquoise pants. But satin pants threaten to be too dressy for class unless you take them down a notch with flats instead of heels. And to be honest, the electric blue isn't my favorite color pairing. For a top, I'd wear something like this one from Nordstrom....

Her Campus Bowdoin Diaries: Consent In All Directions

By Coretta King
May 4, 2012 - 4:21pm

Although "Consent is Sexy Week" has come and gone, consent is a part of our every day relationships. When I think about consent, I view it as an agreement or a mutual understanding between two people—a pact. When you agree to be in a relationship with someone, consent is being put into action. You are consenting to being committed to that person, which includes getting to know that person for his or her strengths and weaknesses. This takes time and effort; for this reason, consent, should not be taken lightly. Life is too short for that. READ MORE

Phase II Course Registration: Tips for Success

By Issy Albi
May 1, 2012 - 7:16pm

I love our traditions here at Bowdoin. The lobster bake, Ivies, and Common Good day are among my favorites. But by far the worst tradition (albeit inadvertent tradition) is Phase II. I have spent many an early morning in line in Lancaster Lounge in order to sign up for classes because I didn’t get in to my first, second and even third choices. I can unabashedly say that I am a Phase II pro. So here are some of my tips: Don’t panic. This is the biggest one. There is a lot of stress at Phase II, but don’t let it get to you. You will be alright. Just keep repeating that to yourself. READ MORE

An Enticing "itis"

By Hope Gimbel
April 29, 2012 - 5:26pm

Following “Consent is Sexy Week,” a foreboding pre-spring break email regarding the influx in STI/STD outbreaks among our wholesome student body and the usual smattering of sensational headlines regarding sex and sexual health found in women’s magazines, I haven’t heard of anything followed by “-itis” being followed by good news in a while. Still, as I was trying to think of something to write about this week, I started to think about an epidemic that has been effecting me, my classmates, and countless underclassman caught in a wave of contagious good vibes: senioritis.

Her Campus Bowdoin Diaries

By Coretta King
April 13, 2012 - 3:32pm

Q: As a queer guy here at Bowdoin I find it hard to date people. Not for the fact that there aren't enough queer students at Bowdoin, but due to the fact there aren't a lot of men interested in having a relationship. The hook up culture is so strong at Bowdoin, both in the queer community as well as the heterosexual community because it's quicker and easier. I like to get to know a person before I become intimate with them. I don't want to compromise my beliefs, but I want to date. What should I do?

Get Organized for Finals!

By Madison Rex
April 8, 2012 - 1:21pm

There are only five weeks of classes left. Five! During the beginning of the semester, your notebooks might have been bursting with papers, your planner might have been filled with nothing more than glorified coloring, and you may have spent a few (or more than a few) all-nighters finishing papers. Well that was the first half of the semester—now is the time to start anew and vow to keep your act together in preparation for finals and the end of the year! After all, Ivies will be here before we know it. Getting by for a week without being swamped with work takes planning, so start now. I have put together a few tips to get and stay organized for the rest of the semester in preparation for finals. READ...

Good Reads for Spring Break

By Issy Albi
March 11, 2012 - 3:23pm

Whether you’re hitting the beach, the slopes, or catching up with high school friends at home, we all have a little free time on break, so why not take some time to read? Unfortunately, every time I pick up a book at Bowdoin it’s for a class, but it’s nice to read for fun and spring break is the perfect time to do this. Here are a few suggestions: 1)    I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe. One of my personal favorites, this book offers a unique perspective of a freshman girl at a large (fictional) university and depicts her transition to college. It’s a longer book (about 400 pages) that is both thought-provoking and relatable, making it really hard to put down. The Bowdoin library has it, so the library in your hometown probably has it too....

Product Review: Beat the Winter Blues with Red Lips

By Taylor Page
February 23, 2012 - 6:44am

February in Maine is not exactly the happiest of months.  I have trouble getting excited about starting my day when it’s gray and dreary outside. I also find that my personal appearance tends to reap the consequences of the February blues. I’m much more likely to wear a ponytail, stick to a wardrobe of leggings and sweatshirts, and go barefaced in the winter than I am in the spring.  It’s just hard to be enthusiastic about trying new beauty products when everything is so bleak.  But no more! In an effort to be more Marilyn and less-slob, I decided to do a comparison of red lipsticks. I compared the lipsticks in 5 categories: color, texture, staying power, value, and kissability. All products listed below can be found at the Rite Aid on Maine St, right...

Money Savvy Fare Finding Tips- Spring Break and Beyond

By Madison Rex
February 19, 2012 - 6:49pm

In case you don’t have a running countdown like me, spring break is only three short weeks away! If you’re going away, or going home, you should probably start thinking about buying plane tickets if you haven’t already. Having gone to Sweden four times since October, I’m what you could probably call a “frequent flyer” (I have 15,000 miles on my Miles & More card. Since January.) I know from experience that tickets can be expensive especially for peak travel times. I’ve done some research to find the best sites and times to help ease the pain/cost of traveling. READ MORE

Affordable Health Care Act to Include Free Birth Control Pills

By Issy Albi
February 17, 2012 - 10:23pm

Over the past few years, we’ve heard a lot about President Obama’s Affordable Healthcare Act, but as college women, few of us have experienced any kind of significant impact on our lives. However, on January 20th, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a newly proposed law that requires religious hospitals, universities and other organizations to provide birth control coverage, despite their moral opposition to doing so. Beginning August 1st, the cost of birth control pills would be included in the co-pay, which means that the majority of employed women wouldn't have to pay for birth control. READ MORE
