Get to Know Kacey

What is your role on campus?

I am currently the President of Bloomsburg’s chapter of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA)

Why did you join NSSLHA and become president?

I definitely wanted to get involved Freshman year because essentially, it’s everyone in the major. I wanted to have a leadership role because I wanted to do more with being a general member. I was a Freshman Representative first, and I wanted to stay on exec for the next year so I became one of the Recruitment Chairs. I wanted a more leadership-demanding position and to help people solve their problems, so I decided last year to run for president, and so far, it has worked out well!

What is your favorite part of NSSHLA?

My favorite part of NSSLHA by far is all the community service and outreach we do. Also, all the donations that we contribute to different causes and the community.

Why did you decide to major in speech-language pathology?

I choose my major because, although it sounds corny, I like to help people. My aunt is a physical therapist and I used to go in to work with her to help. I would get to a help a lot of people and I really liked that aspect of the health sciences field.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I’m going straight into a graduate program. In grad school, I definitely want to do speech pathology instead of audiology. I would love to stay in Bloom for grad school because it’s comfortable to me and I already know the professors well. I’m not opposed to traveling though because it’s really the only time I can live someplace random for 2-4 years. I’m not sure where I want to work yet, but I’m leaning towards a clinic or hospital. I don’t have a preference with the older or younger populations.

Why did you decide to come to Bloomsburg?

I visited a couple places before I came to Bloomsburg but as soon as I stepped on campus I felt like I belonged right away. When I heard about the speech path program, I felt super comfortable and I got a ton of positive information compared to the other schools I visited.

What do you like the most about Bloomsburg?

I really like the people at BU and the campus is so beautiful. We have such a renowned major and great staff of professors in the program. We feel like our own little community here and I love it.

What’s your favorite place on campus?

I like being in the Starbucks in the library. I love the smell of coffee, so it helps me focus. There’s just something studious about a coffee shop.

What’s your favorite activity or service event on campus?

My favorite service event is definitely Relay for Life. Everyone is just so excited to participate. I stayed Freshman year until 5:00 a.m. and people were still going strong. It brings so much of a the campus together for such a great cause.

What’s your favorite place to eat downtown?

Frank’s Pizza. Definitely.

Do you have any advice for Freshmen?

In general, Freshman should definitely get involved in clubs, sororities or fraternities, or anything involving their major. They should take the classes seriously and definitely study. Aim high and have high aspirations for yourself. In my major, I would say definitely get to know the professors. Pay attention in our major-specific classes and take everything super seriously. Keep grad school in the back of your mind because it definitely comes up quicker than you think.
