10 (Bloomsburg) Things We Are Thankful for This Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

Thanksgiving is more than the food; it’s about spending time with your family and your loved ones, as well as thinking about what you’re grateful for. Bloomsburg has brought me so many different opportunities to try new things and get out there in the world.

Taylor here, because Thanksgiving and Christmas are both quickly approaching, here are five things about Bloomsburg that I am grateful for as a first semester freshman.

1. Home Football Games

Even though I’ve only been to one home football game here at Bloomsburg, it was a wonderful opportunity to see the school spirit that fellow Huskies have. I enjoyed every minute of it and I’m glad I went with one of my closest friends. I’m glad I have 3 and a half more years to experience them!

2. Student Health Services Center

This might be a bit questionable as to why I’m grateful for a doctor’s office on campus, but college students get sick so easily! I recently contracted bronchitis and tonsillitis on top of a pretty nasty cold. I’m grateful that I was able to stop by the health center before things got too serious without having to walk a ton to get there!

3. Late Night

It’s always nice having Husky Lounge open until midnight so you can grab a late night snack with your buddies and talk about your exhausting day or what tests you had. It’s so convenient because you can use a meal swipe and you don’t need to eat all the food you have stocked in your room.

4. Starbucks

There are two Starbucks locations on campus which are so convenient for coffee lovers like me. There’s one right by Commons and Subway and there’s one located in the library for when you have finals or midterms and you need caffeine to keep you awake during your long study sessions. I was not able to travel to my local Starbucks as frequently when I lived at home, but now I can go whenever I feel like it.

5. Commons Breakfast

People often talk about the dessert that they serve at Commons; however, I personally find their breakfast options rather enjoyable. I’ve gotten up a few times very early in the morning and I have not once regretted it. They serve waffles, French toast, pancakes, and whatever else you think belongs on a breakfast platter. It almost feels like I’m eating at home.

Jessica here. Five things I am grateful for when it comes to Bloomburg University would be:

6. Commons Cookies

Commons has some of the best snacks and deserts on campus in my opinion. However, some of my favorite treats to eat at commons dining hall are the cookies. The cookies are freshly baked, chewy, warm, and a variety of different types. You have the option of grabbing M&M filled ones, Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, or even Reese’s Pieces. If you are visiting the Commons dining hall that is definitely a highlight for many people and something I am extremely grateful for.

7. Shuttle Bus/Shuttle Drivers

Having to get from different parts of campus is not always an easy task. If you are like me and do not have transportation via a car or carpool, it is not always easy to get from Upper Campus to Lower Campus or JKA to Monty’s, etc. However, with the shuttle buses available you can usually count on a bus arriving at the bus stop every so many minutes to save you from having to walk in the rain, cold, heat, or whatever the weather is. The can even save you from long walks that could take the bus only a few minutes to get to. What else is nice about the bus is that the bus drivers are nice. They always try their best to pick us up on schedule and some will even stop and wait for a person to get to their stop if they are running trying to catch the bus. The music will usually be country or rock, but if you are not into the music you can always listen to your iPod while you wait for your stop. Either way while the shuttle bus and bus drivers are something to be thankful for, you should always remember to thank the shuttle bus drivers for their hard work and dedication to getting all us students where we need to go.

8. School Trips

Even though the days of grade school are behind us, there are a few things that we can look forward to like we did in years ago. One of those things is school trips. While not every class will offer field trips related to the class whether it be to learn more or get extra credit, Bloomsburg does offer many different and cool bus trips and overnight trips that any student can pay for. Just so far this semester, students have had opportunities to see Broadway shows, go to Salem and Boston, and much more. As the year goes by there will also be many more trips and opportunities students can have to grow, learn, and experience that they may never have had the opportunity to do so before.

9. Mount Olympus Apartment/Dorms

While not everyone is so lucky, I feel very grateful and thankful for the fact that I am able to live up in Mount Olympus Apartments or MOA. Living in MOA gives many students the freedom and privacy they need. While living in Elwell or other dorms can be fun, they can also be crowded and not have much solitude. With MOA that is a different story. Not only do residents have their own rooms, but they also get to have 2 bathrooms and a kitchen in their 2 story apartment/house that can give more opportunities for cooking and not having to deal so much with sharing a bathroom at least compared to sharing bathroom in a regular college dorm. If you ever have the chance to live in MOA I highly recommend it. I know it is one of the things I am thankful for here at school.

10. On Campus Activities

The last thing I am grateful for on campus is the activities offered. Our school has so many events and activities that students can participate in to help pass the time, if students wish. Every so many times per semester dogs are brought in that help relieve stress, many clubs hold bake sales to support their clubs or particular cause. Other times students have tables where you make your own tacos, design mugs, etc. outside of MOA or in JKA. There are so many things that students can do on campus, which is why I am grateful the events and activities we have on campus.
