Tips for Scoring Your Dream Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

It’s about that time in the semester when everyone starts freaking out about their summer plans. Your friend in SOM is working for a huge accounting firm, and your other friends have interviews scheduled for the next two weeks. What about you? What are you going to do? Here are a few tips on how to score your dream internship:

1. Do your research. There’s nothing worse than when you sign up for something without actually knowing the job requirements. Take the time to read job descriptions and reqiurements before you apply. When you read something that looks like it was made for you, click that apply button.

2. Check your resume. Typos are a huge no-no when it comes to internships. Make sure you read your resume a few times, and you can even have a friend double check it just to be safe. Your resume is the first thing the company will see from you, so be sure to highlight all of your biggest achievements that relate to the position you’re applying for.

3. Try and network before the interview. It’s all about who you know, but what do you do if you don’t know anyone? Start meeting people. Check out the LinkedIn pages of some of the company’s employees, and see if any have graduated from your high school or college. Then, you instantly have something to talk to them about, and you can mention their name during the interview to show that you know your stuff.

4. Be personable during your interview. The interiew is just a conversation. Remember that! Don’t be too nervous or tense… or at least don’t let it show. Be friendly and lively. Show them that you are passionate about this internship! If they see that you want it badly, they’re going to want YOU badly.

5. Show how thankful you are. After the interview, be sure to send a follow-up email thanking the interviewer for their time. Not only are you being polite, you’re showing them that you care about impressing them. If you do land the job, be sure to thank them again! Make sure they know that you are ready to work and are even more excited to work with them.

We hope these tips helped you out. If you’ve landed an awesome internship for this summer, we want to hear about it!
