Jocelyn Resnick ’14: U R > UR Reflection Campaign

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

Jocelyn Resnick is a senior majoring in Economics and double minoring in Health and Wellness Studies and Spanish. She is this week’s campus celeb because she is working with the faculty run Eating Awareness Committee to create the U R > UR reflection campaign to promote positive self talk. The event will take place tomorrow Friday, February 28 in the West Gym lobby and coincides with eating disorder awareness week. They started the initiative off by challenging faculty and students to finish the sentence “When I look in the mirror…”. They then took a picture of faculty and students holding a sign which resembles a mirror which completed the phrase. According to Jocelyn many individuals were focused on how their photo looked rather than the message they were portraying. Some people asked if they could redo their photo or if the committee could come back a different day when they were less tired and looked more energized. “This shows that not only do students struggle with positive self esteem but the staff do as well.” For the event tomorrow, students and staff will be able to collage their own unique mirror. According to the event page on facebook “We are challenging our campus to see themselves as more than what is refelcted in the mirror!”Here’s some more info about the event and Binghamton’s own health superstar, Jocelyn Resnick:

Why did you decide to become involved with this event?

“We wanted students to look at their lives in a more positive manner and to focus on the positivity rather than the negativity within their lives. When most people look in the mirror they criticize themselves. We are using prominent faculty to serve as role models for students.”

Why do you think its important for students to feel positively about their body?

“I think that everybody has something unique to bring to the table and I think it’s really important that we embrace the positive qualitites that we have and let that shine through”

How have students and staff repsonded ?

“People thought it was a really great idea. We did an event Tuesday night in the residents halls and students were really intriguied by the slideshow and responded by crafting their own mirrors with positive messages. The presentation was really moving a lot of students seemed to connect.”

What is your favorite thing about learning about health and wellnes?

“Im passonaite about nutrition and fitness. I think it is an extremely important topic that eveyone can relate to. As I increase my knoweldge in the feild of health and wellness studies I can spread awareness to others with the goal of improving their quality of life.”
