How to: Wish Your Bestie a Happy Bday in the Social Media Age

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

It’s that time of the year again it’s your bestie’s birthday. You already got her a card and a gift that’s the perfect mixture of sentimental and funny and reminds her of your favorite inside joke, you picked out an outfit that’s really cute but won’t upstage her at her own birthday dinner and you’ve given her a huge hug and a princess crown. So that means you fulfilled all of your birthday bestie duties, right? Wrong. In this day and age all of this isn’t enough. You can’t just wish her a happy birthday in person. If you don’t also wish her a happy birthday on every social media platform then her birthday might as well have not happened at all. And you can officially be remembered by your bestie as “that friend who didn’t post on my wall”. Here’s a guide to being the best bestie ever, and remember what goes around comes around. Don’t expect a thoughtful picstitch on your birthday if all you gave her was a twitter shout out.

Facebook:

So even though fb has lately become irrelevant unless your posting pics or a buzzfeed article for the millionth time it is still extremely important to do a fb wall post on your friend’s bday. Bonus points to the first post. It is the strongest mark of a bestie if your post notification is the first one she recieves at exactly 12:00 am. If the post isn’t at least one paragraph and doesn’t make references to 6 special times you’ve had together than you’re not trying hard enough. Even better if you do multiple posts throughout the day. One for each year you’ve been friends? Awesome. Posts of slightly inapropro birthday songs are encouraged: 2 Chainz’s “Birthday Song”, Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake”, Trey Songz’s “Say Aah” and of course 50 Cent’s “In Da Club “. But if you wanna be a little more PG then The Disney Princesses’s “Happy Birthday Princess” is one of my faves.

Twitter:

Twitter is great for the simple “Happy Birthday Bestie!!! Love you so much! (20 million emoticons)” tweet. Just remeber the number of thoughtful emoticons you use corresponds to how long you will be friends. Emoticons are like math. They are the same in every language, it all translates to love.

Instagram:

All I have to say for this is: Picstich. Just make sure you spend some time on the pictures you choose. Obviously there should be one of the two of you together but also doing one of her solo and saying how she’s such a beautiful birthday girl is deff the right way to go. Also if you’ve been friends for forever than a throwback pic of the two of you is deff a winner and might elecit some tears (score!). Just remember the hashtags you choose can make or break you.

Texts/facetime:

Ok so this isn’t exactly social media but use this opportunity to say all the things you couldn’t say over social media! Like extremely sentimental things or “Thanks for holding back my hair that time I vomed at Tom & Marty’s”.

Snapchat:

This is the time to get really creative with your drawing skills. You holding imaginary balloons and a cake while making your ugliest “only for you would I make this face” face, is the only gift your bestie needs.

YouTube Slideshow:

This is for those of you who really wanna devote some time and who aren’t afriad to get a little artsy. It’s actually really easy to use iMovie and make an adorable slideshow of all your best moments together. Set this to “True Friend” by Hannah Montana (aka Miley Twerkathon Cyrus) or  “Crazy Beautiful Life” by Ke$ha and you’ve got yourself a winner.

Honorable mentions:

Does anyone use Vine anymore? I don’t… but this has some cool potential and keek as well. I don’t even know what tumblr is but if you do then go for it!

Just remember to put your heart into it and your friend will really appreciate any and all Birthday wishes she recieves from her bestie :)
