How To: Stay Healthy During the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

Winter is coming… and so are the holidays!  Whether you celebrate Hannukah, Christmas, New Years, or Finals being over, here is your guide to staying healthy this December!

1. Treat yo’ self… but in moderation.  Tis the season for candy canes and sugar cookies, but there are healthier alternatives to satisfy your holiday sweet tooth.  Fruit makes a great dessert at any holiday meal and orange you glad it’s orange season?  Yum!

2. Start your New Years Resolution early, work it out, ladies!  Why wait until January 1st to hit up the gym?  It’s too crowded then anyways!  The earlier you start working out, the more likely your resolution will stick once the New Year starts.  If you don’t belong to a gym, go on a run if it’s not too cold, do a workout video, or try this New Year’s Workout.

3. Watch out for those holiday drinks (if you are over 21, of course!)  As good as Peppermint Shnapps and Rum-spiked Cider are they aren’t so great for your health.  Unfortunately alcholic drinks are filled with lots of empty calories, so be aware of what your putting into your body.  Check out this website to calculate calorie equivalents: http://rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov/Tools/Calculators/Calorie-Calcul…

4. Shop to get in Shape!  Take advantage of the sales and get new workout clothes maybe even some Jingle Dumb-Bells.  You’ll want to hit up the gym to sport your new workout gear!

5. Don’t stress too much!! After all, it is the holidays, so now is the time to celebrate and indulge a little bit.  Smile and curl up with your favorite holiday classic and a cup of tea.  It’s for your mental health!
