The Many Smells of the Trees Dorms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

As an inhabitant of Spruce 1 (the dorm at the far end of Trees, closest to the actual trees), I spend a good 5% of my day walking inside the building to and from my room. During this portion of my day, I can’t help but notice the distinct aromas of all of the respective Trees dorms: Alder, Birch, Cedar, Elm, Maple, Oak, and Spruce.

As I begin my long walk to class, I leave the familiar musty scent of my home in Spruce. While admittedly I am a bit biased because I live there, I happen to believe that Spruce smells the least vile of all the Trees dorms.

From Spruce I enter Oak, which is eerily reminiscent of a nursing home. The smell of the decades-old couches in the Oak lounge has really penetrated the air on the floor.

To put it simply, Maple smells like fear. Nothing is scarier than having to walk by the RA’s office after you’ve been up to no good all night. If you’re lucky, someone might be baking cookies in the Maple kitchen, allowing you to temporarily forget about the fact that you still have yet another four halls to walk through.

Elm, not surprisingly, hits me with the strong scent of bleach and detergent. I’d like to think that it cleanses my nose in preparation for the painful smells that lie ahead.

Cedar—quite mysteriously, as it’s in the middle of Trees—has no distinct or irregular smell.

And next—ahh—my personal least favorite: Birch. Somehow Birch succeeds at consistently smelling like cold-cut ham or some other variety of salty meat.

As I finally approach Alder and the rest of civilization—usually at a light jog because 1) I’m running late for class and 2) I want to escape the jungle of Trees—I am hit with fresh air. We all know the unique smells of leaves in the rain, the first snow of the year, and when spring has sprung—and I often find myself in Alder greeted by the smell of whatever weather is happening outside.
