In my opinion, the government shutdown was not a bad thing at all. The government claims that whenever it shuts down, they only eliminate “non-essentials,” but keep all essential government functions going. It seems to beg the question, “Why are we paying for non-essentials in the first place?” With the government debt at over twenty trillion dollars, it seems clear that we need to drastically cut back on government spending. What better way than by eliminating non-essentials? The government shutdown highlighted the obvious reality that we do not actually need to fund with taxpayer dollars all of the programs and workers which the federal government provides and employs today. Rather, these activities should either be brought back to the state and local level—or not be addressed by government at all, and instead be given back to the private sector.
