FTF Week
With Spring Break fast approaching, many of us find ourselves dreaming of warmth, relaxation, and, of course, how we’ll look in our bathing suits on the beach. Just yesterday, I overheard two Bentleystudents discussing the detrimental effects of Season’s Birthday Cake ice cream on their bikini bodies. Let’s just say the phrases “muffin top” and “beached whale” were headliners in the conversation.

As college students, most of us have participated in Fat Talk like this at least once in our lives. With the constant temptation of endless chicken nuggets and curly fries, it’s hard to avoid making those seemingly harmless fat jokes. But, whether intentional or not, Fat Talk can lead to serious issues like a negative body image and even eating disorders.

In order to raise awareness about the dangers of Fat Talk in the Bentley Community, the Peer Educators of the Counseling and Student Development Center (CSD)are sponsoring Fat Talk Free (FTF) Week from February 23rd through March 2nd.  Some highlights of the week will include exhibits in Smith featuring the “thin-ideal” and a free screening of the film Real Women Have Curves in the Falcone Function Room.

The Peer Educators are challenging the Bentley students to take notice of Fat Talk, stop it as its occurring, and change the conversation by signing the Fat Talk Free Pledge that will be available for students to sign all week. They will be stopping by a number of different classes and club meetings, in addition to the events, all week long. So, check out one of their events to do your part in making Bentley a Fat Talk Free campus!
