Tip 1: Do the Reading

Often when our schedules fill up we tend to put the reading at the bottom of the to-do list. It may be boring and time consuming, but professors assign it for a reason. Even just skimming the text to find main points is better than nothing. You will get so much more out of class and do better on exams if you take the time to understand what you’re learning. Don’t be afraid to “talk” to the text either! Write down thoughts and questions in the margins so that you really digest whatever it is you are reading.

Tip 2: Take a Break From Your Device

Your cellphone and laptop are basically an extension of you, right? Break that habit, especially when studying. I won’t lecture you on the health risks or throw statistics at you. Through personal experience I’ve learned that while my phone is great for lots of things, it’s also a major distraction. When you hear that little ping signaling a new message you can’t help but pick it up. Imagine what you could get done if you didn’t pick up your phone every five minutes! It’s time for you to study or write that paper you’ve been procrastinating on. Turn on the Do Not Disturb setting on your phone. It silences all messages and notifications, but you can also choose to still receive calls from mom and dad too.

 Tip 3: Pen & Paper

We live in the age of social media and technology, so naturally most of us use our computers when writing a paper. While it’s  great to have spell check, the blue light from your computer makes you tired quicker. Write your paper by hand first, and type it up only after your first draft is complete. Use this approach when taking notes too. Instead of bringing your laptop to class and risk being distracted by online shopping or checking your email, bring a notebook. Writing down important concepts and ideas can help you remember it better! Another plus: you get work on your penmanship at the same time.

 Tip 4: Ask for Help

If you’re struggling to grasp a concept or work through a problem don’t be afraid to ask for help! It doesn’t have to be from the professor. Ask a classmate that understands the lectures and reading to study with you. Take advantage of on-campus resources like Writing and Math labs. It’s natural to be nervous about asking for help, but everyone is there to learn just like you. You’ve probably heard it before, “Chances are if you have a question about something, one or more of your peers are thinking the same thing,” but its true! If you have questions about the assigned reading go into class with those questions ready. It’ll be easier if you ask them at the beginning of class instead of waiting longer when you could lose your confidence.

Tip 5: Have Fun

In moderation, that is. Don’t feel bad when you put off doing homework on Friday night to go out with your friends instead. As long as you don’t put everything off until the last minute you’ll be okay. As college students we have a lot on our plates, so we deserve a break every now and again. Feeling guilty will only make you miserable while you’re supposed to be having fun. Allow yourself some time to relax and focus on non-school related things.

  Tip 6: Manage Your Time

Our lives can become chaotic and overwhelming at times. This is when time management comes in handy! This is an important skill that you should learn and strengthen now because you will need it throughout life. Use a planner and schedule your week beforehand. Don’t wait until the last minute and panic trying to get everything done. The best way to figure out your to-do list is to sit down each weekend and write down all of your assignments, appointments, study sessions, work, etc. This is a good time to take a look at the week ahead and find free time to hang out with friends, call home, and most important of all? Sleep, of course.
