Why Your Best Friend is Like Your Significant Other

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Last week, I was chilling in my room on FaceTime with my best friend from home while my boyfriend was lying on my bed, pestering me to read and edit his theology paper. Since he knew I was ignoring him, he decided to iMessage me to give hundreds notifications and dings while I’m trying to catch up with my BFF. The messages were a lot like this: “HEY.” “READ MY PAPER.” “WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME,” and “FINE I SEE HOW IT IS. YOU LIKE HER MORE THAN ME.” He then took a vow of silence until I finished talking with her.

The next day while I’m in class, my phone just starts dinging multiple times. As I’m hurriedly rummaging in my bag to find my phone and turn off the ringer, I see messages from my BFF to the effect of, “I’M HUNGRY,” “WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO VISIT ME,” and “WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME. I’M JUST TRYING TO LOVE YOU.” It was then I realized that my BFF and my BF had a lot more in common than I thought – they both loved to antagonize me. And they both act super mature, as you can see.

So maybe we choose significant others that act a lot like our best friends in college… here’s a few reasons why:

1. The sense of familiarity

Especially when you’re BFF or SO lives far away, it’s pretty common to look for someone else who is comparable to him or her while away at school.

2. They like the same things that you like.

Makes sense. You wouldn’t choose a BFF that didn’t enjoy getting Chipotle with you (obviously), so why would you choose a significant other that wouldn’t?

3. They get along great when they meet each other.

And by that I mean they enjoy sharing embarrassing stories of you with each other, and therefore giving ammo to the other to be used as blackmail in the future.

4. There’s never a third-wheel situation when you are with both your bestfriend and boyfriend because you love them both equally.

5. You love them, and they love you, and that’s a pretty big thing to have in common!
