While You Were Out: This Week’s Top News

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Here at BC:

Matt Nacier and Matt Alonsozana were elected President and Vice President of UGBC for the 2013 to 2014 school year.  Congratulations to all candidates on a well-fought race, and we are looking forward to seeing what Matt and Matt will do for BC coming next fall!

Global:

The Obama Administration has made it clear to China’s leader, Xi Jingping, that they need to crack down on the regime in Pyongyang (in response to increasing threats from North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un) or the U.S. will be forced to heighten its military presence in Asia.  Because China has been suspicious about the America’s intention in increasing missile defenses and their naval presence in Asia, this understanding between the two countries in defense of North Korea’s threats will certainly prove to be an example of positive international cooperation.

At Home:

President Obama’s budget plan continues to come under attack, with the left criticizing him for proposing changes to Medicare and Social Security.  The budget is due for the beginning of the next fiscal year, beginning on October 1st.  There seems to be little room for a bipartisan compromise, especially with regards to taxes and spending issues.  As President Obama continues to deal with deficit issues through the budget in a balanced way, he receives much criticism and push back from both sides of the bench.

In New York this week, Senator Malcolm Smith was arrested along with NYC Councilman Dan Halloran, Bronx Republican Chairman Jay Savino, and three others who participated in the plot to rig the city’s upcoming Mayoral race.  Because Smith wanted to run for the Mayoral position on the Republican ticket (which is only possible if you have three out of five borough party leaders supporting you), they used an undercover Federal Agent to bribe GOP officials in Queens and in the Bronx.

And that’s this week’s update!

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
Kelsey Damassa is in her senior year at Boston College, majoring in Communications and English. She is a native of Connecticut and frequents New York City like it is her job. On campus, she is the Campus Correspondent for the Boston College branch of Her Campus. She also teaches group fitness classes at the campus gym (both Spinning and Pump It Up!) and is an avid runner. She has run five half-marathons as well as the Boston Marathon. In her free time, Kelsey loves to bake (cupcakes anyone?), watch Disney movies, exercise, read any kind of novel with a Starbucks latte in hand, and watch endless episodes of "Friends" or "30 Rock."
