While You Were Out: Easter Break Updates

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

1. LOCAL – Disciplinary Action May Shut Down BCSSH ‘Safe Sites’

This news is all over Twitter, Facebook and has even reached CNN.  About one week ago, Boston College administrators were forced to threaten disciplinary action against Boston College Students for Sexual Health (BCSSH) when they sent an email asking them to shut down their ‘safe sites.’  Despite a Massachusetts state mandate for universities to hand out contraceptives, the student health center at Boston College does not, sticking to its Jesuit Catholic identity.  BC students set up safe sites where anyone can go to get information on sexual health and contraceptives.  The BCSSH website is a helpful resource for students on campus, but would also have to be shut down if BC Administration decides to take further steps.

2. NATIONAL – Red Equals Sign Goes Viral as the Supreme Court Hears Gay-Marriage Rights Cases

All over Facebook, profile pictures are changing to the red and white equals sign in support of equal rights for gays and the right to marriage supported by the Human Rights Campaign.  This week in Washington, the Supreme Court started holding hearings on gay marriage.  The Court has been deliberating over major cases such as California’s Proposition 8 and arguments regarding the National Defense of Marriage Act.  Despite the thousand-year-old definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman, we are living in a time where love is not segregated by sex and marriage is a legal right that needs to be considered equal under law.

3. INTERNATIONAL – North Korea Announces it is in a ‘State of War’ with South Korea

North Korea’s statement this Saturday, March 30, is a direct address to Washington and Seoul who are involved in affairs abroad.  South Korea and North Korea have technically been in a state of war for over six decades and therefore, South Korea has brushed it off.  North Korea has also threatened to shut down an industrial zone between the two Koreas.  This threat is not new a new one, but a continuation of the provocative threats that North Korea has issued almost on a daily basis since the beginning of March.  It makes us wonder when and if we should take North Korea seriously before it is too late?

4. INTERNATIONAL – Pope Francis Leads Good Friday Celebrations and Begins his Time as Pope

Pope Francis led the Good Friday mass at St. Peter’s Basilica followed by the tradition of doing the Stations of the Cross at night.  During his sermon on Good Friday, Pope Francis reached out to his ‘Muslim brothers’ across the globe.

5. ENTERTAINMENT – Mr. Feeny is Back!!!

It is has been confirmed that William Daniels, who played the beloved teacher in Boy Meets World, will in fact be in the pilot of Disney’s spin-off show, Girl Meets World.  As Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) returns as a dad of two, Mr. Feeny will slip right back into his old role of teacher, but this time for Cory’s daughter Riley, played by Rowan Blanchard.  Although Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter) and Will Friedle (Eric Matthews) paid a visit to the set last week, it was just for fun and they will not appear in the pilot.  One can still hope that they will make a surprise visit at some point during the season.
