What I’ve Learned in College… So Far

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Although you are in school to earn that degree, college is also a time of exploring and finding out who you are and what you want. You are in a new environment. There are no parents telling you what to do, so you have determine the rules for yourself. Here are some tips to guide you on your path through college and self- discovery:

Life Happens.

The best way to get through college is to remember, “Life happens.” Whether you drunkenly sent an embarrassing text, hooked up with someone you shouldn’t have, or failed a test, just remember that it isn’t the end of the world. Brush it off and learn from the experience because “Life happens.” No need to feel embarrassed because chances are a million other college students have made that same mistake and it will help you on your path to self-discovery.

Get Involved.

Boston College has so many amazing opportunities. You probably hear this from everyone, but it’s true so take advantage. Don’t be afraid to try out for the various clubs at BC, with them comes not only a fun and challenging experience, but lasting friendships. The clubs here range from comedy to singing, dancing, sporting teams, etc. There are so many options that you will be sure to find one that fits your interests. Plus, it’s a great way to become friends with upperclassmen that can give you advice on which easy classes to take, as well as, all the invites to the off campus and/or lower campus parties. Also, utilize the career center for all the workshops, career fairs, and resume critiques they provide. Once it hits crunch time and everyone is searching for an internship or job, you will be one step ahead of the game by attending those seminars.

It’s Your Decision.

College life is what you make of it. If you are a look-at-the-glass-half-full kind of person you will do just fine. BUT, if you aren’t than you better snap out of it, enjoy life, and party it up! Go to all the sporting events, showdowns, and plays offered on campus and in Boston. These are going to be some of the best years of your life. School can get stressful, but relax because it will all work out. Don’t forget your school work completely though because when applying for internships or jobs they are going to want to see that GPA on your resume. However in ten years from now, do you want to have memories of O’Neil library or of all the epic parties you attended?

Stay confident.

Ladies, confidence is the key to everything. It applies to school, boys, and your social life. A positive attitude will lead to positive results. Never let someone feel like your less than fabulous. Keep your head up and don’t stop workin’ it!

Well those are the tips I have to offer as of now, but I still have one year left go, so I will keep you updated if I discover any new secrets. Have a wonderful school year! Go Eagles :)

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
