True Life: My Roommate is a Mouse

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Like many students at Boston College, I was very excited to be moving off campus my junior year into what we considered a nice apartment with my friends. What we didn’t know when we signed the lease was that we would be acquiring a fifth roommate, Stuart. For the first two weeks, no one saw Stuart; he stayed very quiet and never showed his face. The first time I saw Stuart was the night of the USC football game. I had walked into the kitchen to grab myself a drink, and there was Stuart, sitting on the stovetop eating pasta. From then on, my relationship with Stuart has never been the same.

Stuart has been making much more frequent appearances, many times stepping on feet, scaring us when we don’t suspect him to be around, intense late-night snacking (on food that does not belong to him) and making noise late at night. To make matters worse, he doesn’t pay rent and when he makes a MESS he doesn’t clean up after himself. He has even begun to enter into other roommates’ bedrooms unannounced. Then again, Stuart is a mouse.

So what is it like living with mice? Put simply, it is not fun, especially when the mouse is smart enough to avoid most of the traps set out. No matter where we leave the traps, what food is left on the trap, or how many traps there are we are not able to catch him! Warning: symptoms of living with a mouse may include: frustration, paranoia, stress, fear, anger, annoyance, intense Google™ searches of “How to catch a mouse,” and excess spending on mousetraps.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
