Things to Do in Boston This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

In my personal opinion, fall is the best season in Boston.  The leaves are starting to change color, fall flavors such as pumpkin spiced lattes and pumpkin bread are back, and there are so many fun fall activities in which to participate!  Here are some ideas that you can do with your friends this fall:

  1. Apple and/or pumpkin picking.  These two activities are the epitome of fall in my opinion.  Not only is it a fun outing with friends, but once you pick the apples and/or pumpkins you can make a variety of fun apple or pumpkin-flavored treats including (but not limited to) apple pies, apple crisps, pumpkin pies, and pumpkin bread.  Oh the possibilities!

  1. Harpoon Octoberfest.  Harpoon Octoberfest in Boston has been a tradition since 1990.  For those of you who are already 21, sip on fresh Octoberfest beer alongside your friends and nibble on bratwursts! Octoberfest is on Friday, October 4th from 5:30-11 p.m. and Saturday, October 5th from 2-9 p.m. at the Harpoon Boston Brewery (accessible by the silver line).  This is something your guy friends would probably enjoy too!

  1. Visit Salem.  Visit the spookiest town in the country during October, when Salem hosts a month long Halloween festival called Haunted Happenings, which features all kinds of really cool events such as a “Boo’s Cruise” and Zombie Prom!

Check out all the events in Salem here: http://hauntedhappenings.org/calendar

  1. Boston Ghost Tour.  If you don’t have the time or means to get to Salem, participate in a spooky ghost tour right here in Boston.  There are a variety of companies that offer tours, which visit various haunted sites in Boston.  Some good ones are the Boston by Foot: Dark Side of Boston Tour, the Ghosts and Gravestones Frightseeing Tour, and the Haunted Boston Ghost Tour.

  1. Columbus Day Parade.  In Boston, Columbus Day serves as a St. Patrick’s Day equivalent for the rather large Italian-American population in the North End.  The best part of the festivities is the parade on Sunday, October 13th at 1 p.m.!

  1. Head of the Charles Regatta.  The Head of the Charles is one of the largest two-day rowing events and is scheduled for October 23rd-24th.  The event attracts more than 9,000 rowers and 300,000 spectators.  It’s one of the biggest events in Boston in the fall so you should definitely check it out even if it’s only for a couple of hours.  You can even make a day out of it and spend some time in Harvard Square as well!
