Take Me Out to the Ball Game

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Especially here in the arctic north that has been Boston this winter, everyone is highly anticipating the warmer weather that comes with spring. For me, spring is much more than blooming flowers and beautiful days; it marks the start of baseball season.

I could watch baseball all day every day—but for those who may not be as obsessed with the sport as I am, there are still a plethora of reasons as to why you should be excited for this year’s upcoming baseball season.

It’s Derek Jeter’s last season.

This either comes with cheers of joy or tears of sorrow depending on your allegiance to the Yankees, but regardless this season will certainly be one that goes down in history. Who knows how Jeter’s last season will play out, but America will definitely be watching.

Joe Maddon is the coolest Manager in the history of forever.

Speaking from an extremely unbiased perspective (I’m not a Tampa native and a die hard Rays fan or anything), Joe Maddon is literally the coolest. He wears the best glasses ever, he is a total foodie, and is all about fostering serious team camaraderie. I honestly don’t think you could ask for anything more in a manager.

The Red Sox are in it to win it…again.

Since we are in Boston, you can’t forget the amazing World Series win at Fenway last season. Rooting for the Red Sox is nearly impossible to avoid in the most amazing city in the country. I mean, who doesn’t want to see more David Ortiz this season—Big Papi never disappoints.

A solid dose of healthy rivalries.

Who doesn’t love good competition? One of my favorite parts about baseball are the rivalries that exist—especially within the AL East. The Red Sox and the Yankees have been rivals since the beginning of time, and it’s always fun when the players participate in a bench-clearing brawl.

The concessions rock at baseball games.

Cracker jacks, hot dogs, and soft pretzels galore…one of the best parts of going to a baseball game is the concession. What better way is there to celebrate America’s favorite pastime than with extremely large amounts of delicious food.

Also…baseball pants.

I had to throw this one in there for the ladies…I mean, c’mon. There is no professional sport uniform that compares in attractiveness to an MLB uniform.  That’s all I have to say about that.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
Meghan Gibbons is a double major in Communications and Political Science in her senior year at Boston College. Although originally from New Jersey, she is a huge fan of all Boston sports! Along with her at Boston College is her identical twin, who she always enjoys playing twin pranks with. Meghan is a huge foodie, book worm and beach bum
