Survival 101: Marathon Monday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

With Marathon Monday just around the corner, BC students anxiously await the most exciting day of the year. While Marathon Monday may be, undoubtedly, the best day of the year at Boston College, it’s easy to get too wrapped up in the excitement of the event and make some mistakes. So for all of you BC students out there who are trying to make the most of April 17th, here are some tips so that you can avoid some serious mistakes on the upcoming Marathon Monday:

1. Make sure you eat a good breakfast.

With so much to do on the best day ever, it is easy to want to jump right into the day’s festivities. Before you start having too much fun, make sure you eat a good breakfast so you can fuel yourself for the day ahead. Last year, my roommates and I bought a bunch of bagels to keep in our room the night before so that we could be ready to get going in the morning.

2. Make sure you cross Comm. Ave early enough in the morning.

I’m not sure at what time they start to close off Commonwealth Avenue, but it’s a safe bet to try to cross the street before 9 if you really want to take full advantage of the day and join in on all of the festivities.

3. Be okay with not having a plan for the day.

Last year, my friends and I aimlessly walked around for a while in the morning. There is so much going on, though, that you’ll be sure to find things to do and find so many ways to have fun. Just go with the flow!

4. Try to watch at least a few minutes of the Boston Marathon.

Since there is so much to do and so much fun to be had on Marathon Monday, people often forget to watch the actual marathon. It’s an amazing race and you can definitely take a few minutes out of the day to go and cheer on the incredible runners. Lots of BC students run the marathon, too, so you can cheer on your classmates!

5. Look at the weather beforehand.

People at BC, myself included, get very excited about planning their Marathon Monday outfits. However, make sure you check the weather ahead of time to know whether or not you’ll need a sweater, a jacket, a hat, etc. Plan accordingly since you probably won’t be going back to your room until late afternoon/evening.

6. Travel with your friends.

The Buddy System! Marathon Monday is crazy and hectic and it is easy to get lost or separated from your friends. Make sure you and your friends stay together and watch out for each other.

7. Drink lots of water.

I promise, you’ll thank me later for this one.

8. Stay safe!

Marathon Monday is an amazing day, but remember to stay safe and be aware of what’s going on around you.

9. Be prepared.

Since you probably won’t be able to go back to your room during the day, make sure you have cash, water, proper attire, your BC ID, your phone, and anything else you might need during the day. You’ll be glad you have everything you need!

10. Have fun!

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Have an amazing day Eagles!!!
