Stages of Being Home During Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Finally, we’re almost done with finals and the end is in sight! We can’t wait to pack up our bags, put away the semester’s books, and curl up in our own beds. Here’s a comprehensive list of stages of being home for the whole month of winter break:

1. The recuperation process (also known as the bliss period). This is also the week immediately following finals. You’re happy to be home, ecstatic to see your family and pets, and you spend your days under multiple blankets with a warm laptop on your stomach watching Netflix. Right?

2. Christmas. The peak of the bliss period. I celebrate Christmas, so for me this is the best part of winter break. You get presents, you give presents, and you eat tons of food and sweets and all the hot chocolate in sight.

3. Now, we enter into the post-Christmas phase right when we’re over the happy hump and ever-so-slightly slipping downwards. The bliss period is coming to an end, we’re no longer as ecstatic over our presents and we’re starting to bloat from all the holiday food. This is also typically the time Collegiettes starts to make their New Year’s Resolutions.

4. Speaking of, the next stage is New Year’s! We’re all wondering how the year went by so fast, and we’re full of new hopes for the coming year. We’re all motivated to check off everything on our list of resolutions, donning a gold sparkly dress and a glass of champagne in hand (maybe even kissing a cutie at midnight!).

5. After New Year’s Day, we then approach the inevitable comedown. We might take a week or two to continue sticking to our resolutions, organizing our lives more than we had in the previous year, but after that, we slowly start to realize that we have nothing to do until we go back to school. We’ve seen all our friends and family from home we needed to see, there’s nothing new on Netflix, and every show is in its winter hiatus until June. So we get into our slump and find ourselves anticipating syllabus week.

6. When we get back to school, we’re back on that high, motivated to do well over the course of the semester and happy to be back with all our friends. We know that even though we had highs and lows, winter break was truly needed and making memories with family and friends was so much more important than the lazy days. Enjoy winter break, Collegiettes!
