The Plex Unveils Its New Spin Studio

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

As a spin instructor at the Plex, I spend multiple hours each week perched on my bike while I count off jumps, coordinate sprints, and motivate students up a variety of challenging hills.   I get to create playlists every week with music I love (aka One Direction and Taylor Swift), and that hopefully everyone in my class loves.  My philosophy has always been that as long as I have my bike and my iPod, then I can get an amazing workout in that combines both cardio and strength.

So while the old spin room wasn’t the most motivating space, or the most aesthetically pleasing space, it did the trick.  There were plenty of bikes as well as a stereo that let me blast “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “What Makes You Beautiful.”  There were fans to cool off the room when the air became heavy with sweat, and a microphone so that all my “spinners” could hear my instructions.  And let’s not forget the mirrors.  They were strategically placed in the front (behind the instructor, thank goodness) just in case you wanted to see how you really look while working out…sweaty and red.

Clearly, I have some nostalgia for the old spin room.  But man oh man, the new spin room might just be the greatest thing to happen to the Plex since I’ve been at BC.  If you haven’t experienced a spin class in the new room, then you better call the Equipment desk right now and reserve your spot (the number is 617-552-0796 and you can call up to one day in advance to sign up!).  Never been to a spin class?  Don’t worry!  It’s a known fact that all the spin instructors LOVE newcomers!  It is an amazing workout and you can totally take it at your own pace.

If I haven’t yet convinced you to check out spin, then keep reading.  The new room has all new bikes that make for one of the smoothest rides you will ever experience.  The bikes are magnetic, which means that they make zero noise.  Remember that old whirring sound from the old bikes?  That doesn’t exist anymore.  The only sounds you will hear during the 55-minute class are from the brand new stereo system.

And you don’t have to worry about overheating during your workout because the new room is temperature-regulated.  There are also brand new fans to help move the air around during class.  If you do get too sweaty or too hot, you have a clean towel waiting for you on the handlebars of your bike.  Not too shabby, right?

But get ready, because I saved the best for last.  Drum roll, please.  There are colored lights.  The atmosphere and mood of the sport is taken to a whole new level with the dimmed lights…and the colored disco ball.  Yep, you read that right.  I said disco ball.

So basically, you HAVE to take a class in the new spin room.  Whether you are a seasoned pro or completely new to the sport, the new room is worth checking out.  And if you like Taylor Swift, One Direction, and Maroon 5, then you should check out my classes on Mondays at 7:15 a.m. and Fridays at 9 a.m.  Keep spinning!
