It's Whatever, I'm a Birthday B*tch

By Maddie Schmitz
April 30, 2013 - 12:00am

I’m really not that much of a princess (insert my father’s scoff), but there is one day of the year when I can’t help but indulge in delicious spoiled b*tchiness, marked by demands for attention and cake and glitter and brunch.  This day, of course, is my birthday.  I love my birthday so much that I plan for it basically year-round.  Over the past two decades (how did I age so rapidly?), I have accumulated a list of pretty consistent demands for my day of, well, me.  It’s nothing crazy, like I don’t expect trips to Antigua or Cartier bracelets, but any self-respecting girl should feel free to pamper herself on her special day.  If people are bugged by your unprecedented (and temporary) egocentricity, just turn to them, lower your aviator sunnies, and say...

My Love-Hate Relationship with Rain Boots

By Gabby Alleyne
April 29, 2013 - 12:00am

They say that April showers bring May flowers.  Let me be the first to say that enduring those April showers is no fun.  Sporting a noisy, puffy rain jacket to class?  No, thank you.  My hair’s permanent state of dampness?  Not my thing.  Waking up to gloomy, stormy skies?  Doesn’t exactly get me psyched for class.  Wanting to relax in my bed all day to catch up on Girls, yet feeling obligated to trudge through the rain just to sit through my lackluster 9 AM?  Blah. Be Styled Offers Pampering with Perfection

By Morgan Gibbons
April 29, 2013 - 12:00am

You are greeted by a sweet and sophisticated staff of stylists upon arrival.  You choose a hairstyle based off your hair color and length from an iPad.  You get your hair washed and massaged, which by the way is a perfect form of stress relief as finals approach.  Everyone gets offered water (regular or cucumber), champagne or coffee as well as candy as they sit and get styled.  And let me say, all of this takes place in a spotless sleek salon of white and baby blue that looks like it was imported straight from a scene of “Gossip Girl”.  I seriously thought someone would have to pinch me after my experience at the newly-opened Be Styled blow-dry bar in Chestnut Hill... was this real life? It’s Not Me, It’s You: Breaking Up With A Guy You’re Not Dating

By Briana Galluccio
April 29, 2013 - 12:00am

Hey you.  Yeah, you, I was talking to you. I find it a little sad that it’s necessary for me to break up with you, because we aren’t even dating.  And we never will date. READ MORE

Review: No One Belongs Here More Than You

By Meaghan Leahy
April 28, 2013 - 2:21pm

One hot and humid night last August, I wandered into a Barnes & Noble to revel in the air conditioning. While walking through the alphabetical-by-last-name rows of fiction and literature, I found a favorite book of mine, No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July. Upon opening it, a handwritten note fell out—something I would expect to find in a used or independent bookstore, not in this massive chain franchise.  READ MORE

So You Had a Bad Day

By Danica Ramsey-Brimberg
April 28, 2013 - 12:00am

We’ve all been there.  Life seems absolutely awful, and it seems like there is no hope in sight.  That light at the end of the tunnel keeps getting farther and farther and farther away... READ MORE

Post-Graduation Trip Planning Guide

By Caitlin Mann
April 27, 2013 - 10:50pm

Spring is (finally) in the air.  It’s the last week of classes.  Finals are around the corner and graduation is less than a month away.  People are starting to realize that we’re almost part of the real world.  We’re interviewing for jobs, finding apartments, and planning trips around the country and around the world. Think about it.  What better time is there to set off on a new adventure?  We’re young, we’re energetic, and we’re enthusiastic.  We’re excited to live and to experience new things.  We want to meet new people and go new places and try new things.  We want to explore the world.  We want to make memories. Why I Love Arts Fest

By Danica Ramsey-Brimberg
April 27, 2013 - 12:44am

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With the kids running crazy, And everyone telling you, “Be creative!” It’s the most artistic time of the year!   Ok, probably not the tune that you were thinking of mid-spring.  The song, however, was one of the few that could capture my emotions about BC Arts Fest.  For those unfamiliar with this lovely weekend, it is when Boston College finally devotes some much-needed attention to all of the arts.  Performances and exhibits occur through out the weekend, and it is just plain awesome.   READ MORE

Give Your Eyes a Break and Find the Good News!

By Katherine Valentino
April 27, 2013 - 12:00am

Recently I watched a video on Amy Poehler’s Youtube Channel, Smart Girls, called Ask Amy.  In Episode 20, “I Love You Boston,” she spoke about how sometimes our eyes are bombarded with horrible images and it can take a toll on us.  It can be mentally draining.  After Monday’s events, many of us can’t help but constantly watch the news.  We don’t necessarily want to see these images, but it’s almost like we have to.  Amy Poehler gave some good advice.  She said she wonders if we could give our eyes a break.  Her video inspired me to comprise this list of good news blogs.  Give yourself a break from all of the chaos in the world and just focus on the good things for a while....
