An Open Letter to My Friends at Home and at School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.
For my friends at home and at BC. Thank you for all that you do for me.

Dear Fam x2,

I feel like the luckiest person to be able to call two groups of people my “squad.” It’s so hard to believe that you all are from different states and don’t know each other, yet have had the same significant impact on me. Thank you for making me who I am today and for sharing the good, bad, and ugly with me. I hope that one day y’all can meet and be just as close as you are to me.

To my friends from home: Never in a million years would I have imagined that I would end up in New England or that we would scatter around the country and even go overseas. Making connections in college was different, but we keep each other updated through ridiculous Snapchats, long texts, emails, FaceTime conversations, group Oovoo chats (then laughing hysterically the whole time), and even writing letters. Something about a familiar face to talk to while feeling so far from home made the transition so much easier. Thank you for your unending support from so far away and your effort to keep up with my life as well as your detailed updates on your lives.
Even though we are at least a couple states apart, I hope you know that you are the ones who saw me grow up, learn, make stupid mistakes, make good choices, and most importantly, you watched our friendship grow. At the end of the day, you’re the one who witnessed all my embarrassing moments throughout the past several years and trust me, there were many cringe worthy things that I’ve done.

You were the first people who heard about our stupid middle school drama, stood by each other through the awkward years, persevered through cotillion, and entered the world of high school together. We survived the treacherous journey up the social hierarchy from freshman (remember we had to bow to seniors?)  through senior year with confidence and poise. Even though there were some bumps in the road along the way, I can confidently say that I am so proud of each and every one of you for who you grew to become as well as what you achieved in a short four years. We entered freshman year as shy, naive, but (potential-filled) kids and graduated senior year (in those infamous white gowns with white gloves) as confident, accomplished, young women, ready to take on college apart from each other.
I know that they say that you fall out of touch with friends from home after college and while that may be true for some people, I know that it won’t happen to us. Growing up with you all has been the best and most adventurous experience we will go through and I hope that there are many more to come in the following years. There is never a day where I feel apart from you all because I know that you are always a phone call (or text) away. I miss you and I hope that the next four years become just as amazing as the past four years we’ve had. Y’all feel like home and give me so much to be excited about whenever I head back home from Boston.

To my friends at school: The seemingly big town I called home seemed so small after I moved to Boston. Even though some of you are from close-by or really far away, you made me feel at home in a place I never dreamt of going. I can’t believe that just a few months have brought us so close. Thank you for embracing my weird quirks (I know I love my vacuum and clorox way too much) and for appreciating my country music. Thank you for making fun of my southern-ness and for coming to countless late night runs with me. I admire each of you for your hilarious comments, ability to give me sound advice, making sure that I’m okay, and for being amazing unofficial roommates. Thank you for trying Old Bay and not making fun of me for hanging the Maryland flag everywhere. To my roomie: thank you for listening to my crazy rants and for always taking my side in things.
The best part of my day is coming back to my room and having you all in my room (usually, yelling some joke at me as I walk in). You brighten each day and I love spending time with you. Thank you for always making good use of my body pillow and throw blanket. Y’all are the only people I ever want a good morning text from. I’ll never forget our late nights, long weekends, and endless hours spent talking in the booths at Stuart. I hope that the next four years are full of just as many fun times as we’ve had in the first 5 months.

To both my squads: You all follow each other on social media and kindly (and religiously) like each other’s Instagram pictures (yay for a nice follower/following ratio) and enthusiastically get into my Snapchats too. Thank you for keeping up with each others names, faces, interests, and which sororities you are all in (Kappa Keyes for the win though). Thank you for appreciating my friendships between two different groups and for making me a happy girl each and every day.

Love you all,
Michelle
