Movies from the 90s that Everyone Should See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Now I know that we are the generation born in the 90s, but hey, not all of us were exposed to the movie magic of the 90s. I am going to share with you some of my childhood favorites as well as some movies that I have come to adore as an adult. I can’t get over how many great movies there were- minus the fashion sense during that decade, but honestly we can let that slide for now. Trust me, once you start you will be looking up all the movies from 90s that you never got to watch as a kid. Below is a list of my favorites and a few sentences on why. Enjoy!

1)    3 Ninjas (1992)

No I am not kidding, this movie is amazing. It was one of the first movies I remember watching over and over again. It was action packed, had some romance, and taught me to do a sick ninja kick that I made sure to use to impress all the boys in kindergarten. I mean yes the movie is a little bit inconsistent, like how three Caucasian boys have a wise, old, ambiguously Asian grandfather but at this time I think the country was going through a ninja phase, so can we really judge?

2)    Jurassic Park (1993)

This movie was the scariest thing I saw when I was little. For months after seeing this I had this recurring dream that a t-rex would come crashing through my window and eat me for a midnight snack. This of course never happened, but the movie has stuck with me ever since- it was a significant part of my life.

3)    The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Alright so now we are getting into what I started watching when I was older. It is just awesome. It’s not scary in the way that we are used to now with blood and gore and messiness. Instead, it was controlled and tasteful, got under your skin, and creeped you out in a different way. I think it is definitely worth watching.

4)    Clueless (1995)

If you haven’t had the privilege of enjoying this movie, then you really aren’t living. This movie told me what high school was like. I’m just kidding, but really, for many years I did think that I would be Cher and that I needed to find my Dione. This movie touches on being a teenager and all the struggles that come with it in a hysterical and real way that no movie today seems to be able to do. I think even though the clothes are outdated and the slang is just heinous, we can still learn a lot from Cher.

5)    Cruel Intentions (1999)

I had seen bits of this movie when I was younger, and there are references to it in Scary Movie I think, but I didn’t actually get to see it until this summer. It is insanely weird, but also very well done. I actually have to say that it might be one of the better movies that I’ve seen in a while. It’s all about youth, but it focuses on the worst parts of being young. It doesn’t apologize for the story, and it doesn’t try to teach you anything really. All it does is very blunt manner and is able to show you the world from one twisted point of view. It’s a movie that really messes with your head but still does it in an entertaining way. I also think that the actors in it play each roll flawlessly, and nothing beats good acting.

Now all these movies are a little more off the beaten path so to speak, so I am just going to quickly list off a few others that are more recognizably 90s. I want to point out that the 90s had a wide range of movies that came out, and I think that the movies during this decade, though the fashion is outdated and antiquated, are still super applicable to our lives today. Give it try and watch one. Honestly, you won’t be disappointed.

Other movies from the 90s you may recognize: Life Size, Spice World, 10 Things I Hate About You, Cadet Kelly, Pretty Woman, Home Alone, Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, Zenon, Dazed and Confused, The Sandlot, and Father of the Bride.

This was just to name a few. There are so many more worth watching. I would highly recommend taking a little stroll down memory lane and enjoy the decade of our childhood. Grab some popcorn and get some friends. Make fun of the hair, clothes, and absurd animation and special effects and remember that this was all cutting edge at one point. Happy viewing, people!

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
