With the debate last Thursday and dorm walks all weekend, the campaign for UGBC President and Vice President is really heating up.  Many students have heard a lot from the candidates, but Her Campus BC wanted to make sure our readers had all the facts.

Here are Matt Alonsozana and Matt Nacier, running for UGBC President and Vice President.  Both have been actively involved in UGBC for the majority of their time at BC, and both have held positions on several student advisory boards.  Not to mention that Matt Nacier is a former Campus Cutie!  We looked into what they want to bring to UGBC and the BC community in the upcoming semesters, and what changes they want to make in order to improve the BC experience.

1. Names

Matt Alonsozana

Matt Nacier

2. Hometowns

Matt A:  Baltimore, MD – born and raised!

Matt N:  Born in Brooklyn, NY, then moved to Texas where I now live with my Mom and sister in Highland Village.

3. Majors

Matt A:  Economics and Biology;  Pre-Law Concentration

Matt N:  Philosophy and Econ.  Philosophy because I love it and Econ because I think I love it.

4. Other involvements on campus

Matt A:  Presidential Scholar, Class of 2014, UGBC Senator and Chairman of the Policy Caucus, Asian Caucus Co-President, OASP Student Advisory Board, Winner of the Inaugural Klein Business Ethics Case Competition

Matt N:  Chief of Staff of UGBC’s Cabinet, Co-Founder of Jamaica Magis Service Trip, OASP Advisory Board Member, Core Curriculum Advisory Board Member

5. What do you think sets you apart from the other candidates in this election?

Matt A:  Our ability to work together as a team, coupled with our many leadership experiences here and elsewhere that feed into our creative vision, distinguishes us from any other team and makes us the most prepared for the job to move BC forward.

Matt N:  I argue that our collective experiences at BC and in UGBC make us very capable to run the government next year.  With the new structure, we appropriately fill the new roles with President being a manager and the Vice President working tirelessly on policy.  Most importantly, we are great friends and make an amazing team.

6. What is one thing you really want to make happen on campus?

Matt A:  I would really like to increase the public health focus and mentality of Boston College, from being the only team to endorse and spearhead the alcohol point system to increasing mental health awareness and resources for all students.

Matt. N:  Work to have a campus where the stigmas that come with solidarity are no longer a concern for students.  I see that solving this issue would serve as a springboard toward overcoming many other problems such as efforts towards a GLBTQ resource center, sexual health resources, and AHANA inclusion.

7. What is the thing you’re most excited for during this election process?

Matt A:  The blessing of working with such an amazing group of friends who are also committed to changing our community for the better.  I am only able to do such awesome things because I work with such awesome people.  I wake up every morning thankful for the chance to see them and go to bed grateful for having gotten to know them a little better each day.

Matt N:  I absolutely love dorm walks.  Yeah yeah, I’ve heard that some people aren’t fans of soliciting votes so I try to keep it brief or first ask if they mind me talking to them.   Nonetheless, I can’t deny how exciting it is to meet so many new people.  Sometimes you get to have an awesome conversation where you get to hear someone’s story and tell him or her how you want to work to better a place you love.

8. Should we expect any surprises from your campaign?

Matt A:  Yes, we will not be looking to lose the election in 10 days but instead be going on titanic dorm walks to remember.  Even during the holiday, we make the vow to be eating, praying, and loving with our campaign team and writing in our notebooks…. definitely, maybe

Matt N:  We tried to get lions, tigers, and bears in the quad, but we thought it would obstruct students on their way to class.  Sorry I know you must be disappointed.
