The Man Who Never Speaks…Spoke

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Ever since President Donald Trump has been in the office, there has been non-stop news. On Friday, January 27, 2017, Trump signed his executive order enacting his travel ban. This ban will keep immigrants and refugees from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia out of the USA. This travel ban is what has led to the chaos around airports worldwide.

This article is not about politics, it is about morals. Being raised in a Christian home, my parents have taught me how to love everyone, even those who may not have the same beliefs as myself. These past few years have been a lot to take in for a person of color, better yet, a college student of color. There have been numerous acts of discriminations worldwide, some too exhausting and emotionally draining to comprehend.

On January 29, 2017, my phone lit up as I was about to go to sleep. I saw that it was an email from Fr. Leahy. As I was reading the email, I was happy that he addressed the executive order to the entire BC community. This is the first time I can recall an authoritative figure at our university publicly speaking out about a discriminatory action that has occurred within our nation. This took me by surprise because Fr. Leahy is known for not commenting on anything that could be somewhat controversial.

While I am happy that he addressed the executive order, I am also a bit concerned as to why our administration picks and chooses when they should say something in terms of social justice and discrimination. Is it only under certain circumstances that we should be “men and women for others?”

The letter that the BC community received is a step in the right direction that many students have been hoping for. Hopefully, this is not the last time we hear from our administration.
