Keep Calm and Marath-On

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The marathon is approaching quickly and so is everything that goes along with it.  But don’t fret, I’ve got you covered with these five easy steps for marathon prep!

1.  Get your marathon tank/pinny/t-shirt/sunglasses.  Everyone knows that it is key to have a marathon shirt to wear on Marathon Monday!  And from what I’ve seen all over Facebook, we should all be covered with one, or seven, different options.  Whether you like neon, beer pong, or country music quotes, there is definitely a shirt for you.

2.  Explain to all of your friends who don’t go to BC that you have the day off for Patriot’s Day aka Marathon Monday aka the best holiday ever and they don’t.  Then proceed to remind them of this every chance you can.  They should be jealous of you.

3.  Make a plan on how to cross Comm. Ave.  You might as well just plan that out now because crossing Comm. Ave on the day of the Marathon is a death wish.  I’ve never seen someone look at me the way that the crowds looked at me when I casually tried to walk across the marathon route freshman year (dumb).

4.  Plan your marathon pre-game (if you’re over 21 of course!).  Marathon Monday is hands-down the best day for “dartying.”  No class, no stress, and no drama allowed.  Everyone is happy to have the day off and excited to celebrate by watching people run by for three hours straight while you scream and play drinking games.

5.  Most importantly have fun!  While the marathon is definitely one of the best days to be a BC student and a Boston resident, it is also important to be respectful to the runners and cheer on everyone that you see.  They are running over 26 miles while we walk ten feet to stand and cheer all day.  Don’t be that girl (or guy) who everyone is making fun of, but still have a great time. Remember, it’s the best day of the year!

Kelsey Damassa is in her senior year at Boston College, majoring in Communications and English. She is a native of Connecticut and frequents New York City like it is her job. On campus, she is the Campus Correspondent for the Boston College branch of Her Campus. She also teaches group fitness classes at the campus gym (both Spinning and Pump It Up!) and is an avid runner. She has run five half-marathons as well as the Boston Marathon. In her free time, Kelsey loves to bake (cupcakes anyone?), watch Disney movies, exercise, read any kind of novel with a Starbucks latte in hand, and watch endless episodes of "Friends" or "30 Rock."
