How to Stay Ahead When You’re Feeling Far Behind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I know that school starting has made me feel like I’m just treading water, just barely keeping up with the work I have and feeling like every minute of every day is booked to capacity. Well, I hope that it’s not just me. I have learned a few things that really help me get through my weeks of internship, classes, work and social life.

·      Schedule: Write it all out. Everything that has to be done weekly. If you can visualize it, it won’t be as scary each week.

·      Write things down: Even small little assignments should be written in a notebook or planner or your IPhone…something you look at every day, just to help you recall. Plus things always fall through the cracks. When this happens you don’t want to feel blindsided and this way you won’t be.

·      Schedule social time with some study time: On nights that I have light homework I try to do some work with friends too. We sit together and agree to be quiet for 10 minute intervals and then 20 minutes fun time!

·      Make meals a social event: Even if you have 10 minutes for dinner you should try to sit with a friend. Everyone needs a break and it will help you be able to do your work better because you got a mental break.

·      Pick a night that strictly a “no excuses” homework night: I always do homework on Tuesday. Tuesdays are my library and homework days. No matter how fun something sounds if my work isn’t done for at least the next two days then I don’t go out.

·      Stay active: Even taking a walk with a friend or taking the stairs to class help you get some aggression out and gives you the feeling of being healthy when you are so stressed out. I like to try to make it to the gym at least 4-5 times a week.

·      Two words, “office hours”: Just go in and see you professor. If they know you and like you then they will be more likely to give you leeway on assignments.

·      Have a friend you can vent too: Just have that friend that you know everything is safe with and just go off about your life. If you get it out then you feel better and you can move on a changed person!

·      Sleep whenever you can: Take naps whenever you can! Just 10 minutes can make all the difference in your day, mood and mental well-being.

·      Don’t forget to take alone time for yourself: Sometimes you need to just climb into bed and watch a stupid show by yourself and guess what, it helps!

·      Lists: Last but not least just write everything you did that day and cross it off. The act of crossing it off it just so satisfying!

I hope this helps you guys in your day to day life. School is tough and so I take all the help I can get. Hopefully I’ve helped a couple of you guys out, too!
