This past July brought sadness to the Glee world when the show’s star, Cory Monteith, passed away. The actor, who played lovable Finn Hudson on FOX’s hit musical comedy, was a fan favorite, and one of my personal favorite up-and-coming celebrities. Like many other fans, I saw aspects of my high school self in the characters of Glee, struggling to find out exactly who I was, and how that person would fit into the caste system at school. Out of all the personalities on the show, however, Monteith’s character seemed to mirror mine most. Finn gave me the courage to turn my dreams into reality.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I actually cried over Cory Monteith’s death. For days I was in a fog, asking myself why something like this had to happen. I suddenly found massive amounts of eerie foreshadowing amidst various episodes, and it haunted me. Even the sound of his voice in recordings sounded different and distant somehow.
But then I remembered how much joy Cory and Glee brought and will continue to bring to the world. I realized that I needed to cherish all these beautiful memories, instead of bringing my spirits down with mourning. Glee fans are strong, and will overcome this loss together. Cory’s friends and loved ones are in my prayers, and I know that they will keep his memory alive. Finally, Cory, thank you for helping me spread my wings. I hope you’re still playing your music somewhere, may you rest in peace.
