Great Rom Coms for a Lazy Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Lazy Days are the best because you can sit down with a comfy blanket and watch great movies all day… especially romantic comedies. The ultimate female film genre never ceases to make me laugh, and by the end, they make me wish I had something as perfect as the main characters’ relationships. On lazy days like the snow day, these movies are especially beautiful. There’s something perfect about sitting on the couch or in bed all day with no worries except for what is happening on the screen. Here are some quality romantic comedies that you can watch back to back the entire day:

1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This is one of my favorite films and will make you laugh, and it will make you cry. As cliche as this sounds, it’s true. It centers around two people, Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan), and the ways that their lives connect. They begin as strangers carpooling away from college to move to New York City, and the film traverses their subsequent friendship through the years. It is beautifully done and includes some truly iconic scenes (this is the film that gave us “I’ll have what she’s having”).

2. The Princess Bride (1987)

This is one of the greatest films, in my opinion, because it encompasses so many different genres and causes a ton of different emotions. There’s action, adventure, comedy, romance, and everything in between. Based on the book of the same name, it centers around a man named Wesley who overcomes so many obstacles in order to rescue his beloved, Buttercup, who is set to marry an evil prince. There is kidnapping, deception, murder, and finally love. Definitely worth your time on a cold snow day, especially since it is set in a beautifully sunny landscape.

3. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

This is so obviously 90s, and it’s fantastic because this is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. A very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Cameron, a new kid who falls for the beautiful Bianca. But the only way Bianca’s father will let her go on dates is if her shrewish sister Kat gets a date. So, Cameron pays the mysterious bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date Kat. The movie centers around the goings on of this whole ordeal and the consequences that ensue. It’s both funny, heartbreaking, and romantic, everything a rom-com should be.

4. Dirty Dancing (1987)

If you haven’t heard of Dirty Dancing, where have you been?? This is a classic movie that everyone should see. It takes place in the summer during the 60s and focuses on the romance between the rich Baby and the working man, dancer Johnny. He shows her some hot dance moves and she shows him what it means to be valued. Their differences are prevalent but not overpowering, and show just how powerful love is. It has some pretty intense scenes, along with some comedic ones, but overall it is a very beautiful movie

5. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey, and Harry Connick Jr. head the cast in this film which focuses on New York fashion designer Melanie (Witherspoon) and her troubles getting a divorce from her Alabama husband (Connick Jr.) so she can marry her New York fiance (Dempsey). Melanie goes from the big city back to her small southern town where her new elitist attitude is not entirely embraced by her old childhood friends. It’s filled with sweet moments along with the usual dramatic scenes, but mostly it’s about Melanie’s self reflection and finding her true self along with her true love.

Check out these movies the next time you have a lazy day!!!
