Get to Know Local Charities: Birthday Wishes & The One Fund

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Here at Her Campus BC, we’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently about how we can better serve the local community.  We are all guilty of getting caught up in the BC bubble, so reaching out to nearby organizations can help to break that bubble!  After researching local charities for our upcoming fashion show, we decided to focus on two outstanding organizations: Birthday Wishes and The One Fund.  All of the proceeds from our event will be benefiting these two amazing groups.

Birthday Wishes

As soon as we heard about this organization, we knew we wanted to help out.  The mission of Birthday Wishes is to provide birthday parties for homeless children.  The organization’s philosophy is that, “all children, regardless of their living situation, should celebrate their birthdays joyfully, surrounded by family, friends, and others who care.”

The group was founded in 2002 as a volunteer organization serving just one local shelter.  Since then, Birthday Wishes has expanded its program to serve over 175 shelters in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Long Island, NY.

If you want to learn more about Birthday Wishes, definitely check out their website here.  They are always looking for donations as well as volunteers for both parties and behind-the-scenes activities.

The One Fund

In light of everything that has happened the past few weeks, The One Fund is a great way to show your support and love for Boston.  Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino formed The One Fund Boston, Inc. to raise money to help the families most affected by the tragic events that occurred during this year’s Boston Marathon.

Mayor Menino summarized the fund’s purpose perfectly:  “We are one Boston.  We are one community.  As always, we will come together to help those most in need.  And in the end, we will all be better for it.”  We are so grateful to live in such a community-driven city and are excited to give back to Boston as much as we can.  For more information about The One Fund, check out the website here.

And don’t forget to buy your tickets to the HC BC fashion show, happening this Thursday from 7-9 p.m. in the Rat.  Like we mentioned earlier, all proceeds will be going to these fabulous charities.  So grab your friends, head to the Rat, and get ready to have a fun night for a great cause.  Tickets are on sale today and Wednesday from 12-3 p.m. in Hillside as well as at the door on Thursday.  Or you can purchase them online here.  Donations are welcome, too!
