Football Talk: Impress Your Crush at the Super Bowl Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Like every other girl who watches the Super Bowl, most of us are interested in the commercials. Shocker. And that’s where we butt heads with the guys. They want to watch the game and eat the seven-layer dip you made in your $35 microwave. In order to avoid (or cover up) the stereotypical “commercial-watching” mantra, I’ve put together a few key phrases and vocab terms you should put to use when chatting about the game with your crush.

Note: The Seahawks and the Broncos are in the Super Bowl… for those of you who didn’t know.

Disclaimer: Refrain from saying how cute or hot any of the players are in front of your crush, despite how good-looking Eric Decker is.

Vocab:

Line of Scrimmage (n.): Where the ball is placed after each play.

First Down Marker (n.): The yellow line that runs across the playing field. The team has four chances to get the ball to this first down marker in order to get a new set of plays to score a touchdown.

Field Goal (n.): When a team decides that they will be unable to attain a first down within four plays and they are close enough (1-45 yards away) to the end zone, they can have their kicker kick the ball through the big yellow “U” in order to get three points.

Phrases:

Pass Interference (v.): The wide-receiver runs out for a pass, and the person defending him hits his arms or hands, or pushes him, “interfering” with the receiver’s chance of catching the ball. The player who interfered gets a penalty for his team.

Example: “OMG, Richard Sherman (Seahawks’ cornerback) interfered with Eric Decker (Broncos’ wide-receiver) as Decker was trying to catch the pass!”

“Roughing the Passer” (v.): The quarterback drops back to pass the ball. When he releases the ball to pass it, the defender who is trying to “get” him tackles him to the ground. If this penalty is called on the defender’s team, the offense is allowed to move the line of scrimmage up fifteen yards (closer to the end zone).

Example: “Peyton Manning (Bronco’s quarterback) got taken down by Cliff Avril (Seahawks’ defensive end) after he already threw the ball. The Seahawks are in trouble now!”

Key Phrase: “This Super Bowl should be really exciting. The Bronco’s have the number one offense in the NFL, and the Seahawks have the number one defense. Peyton Manning, with his record-setting touchdowns this year, leads the Broncos with their offense, and Richard Sherman leads the defense for the Seahawks with all of his interceptions.

Once you get through all this talk, you have the wonderful break of Bruno Mars telling you that you’re great “Just the Way You Are,” even if all of this football knowledge is coming out of thin air.
