Everyday Struggles of Being Indecisive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The word “struggle” is an understatement for the response I have when faced with making a decision. This wouldn’t be such a problem if decisions weren’t singlehandedly the most dominating entity in our lives. Forever. Here’s a list of perhaps the biggest struggles an indecisive person, like myself, may come across on a daily basis.

  • The word “impulsive” will NEVER find its way into your vocabulary.
  • It has become habit to create a pros and cons list for almost any and every possible decision. While this may seem like a good and logical idea to most, indecisive people know this to be a brain-racking task that is more time consuming than anything. Even things that don’t have apparent pros and cons can generate a pretty lengthy list with the help of a creative imagination. The best part is that in the end it doesn’t actually help for anything. We realize it’s irrational and lame but hey we continue to do it. Why… no one knows.
  • You always feel like you are pissing people off at your inability to decide. This then leads to you feeling bad for your indecisiveness and apologize profusely. Now, if you didn’t actually piss them off the first time, congrats because once you start vomiting apologies the pissed off scale hits a max and there’s no turning back.
  • Menus actually frighten you. While most people like to have a wide variety of food options to choose from, the less items the better for us indecisive kind.
  • Getting dressed may be the single most difficult task that exists. Unfortunately because nudity is frowned upon, this is one decision that we cannot walk away from.
  • Shopping requires you to channel your inner actor. While you appear to be having a wonderful time on the outside, on the inside you know it’s a freaking nightmare. When choosing between two pairs of shoes you love, you often end up with neither. Sometimes going with nothing is a more realistic option for you than choosing one over another.
  • We need to release the stress that comes with our indecisive feelings once and a while—whether it be working out, yelling into pillows, crying, or spooning ice cream. Just remember, before you decide make sure you ask your mom, your roommates, your aunt, and anyone else within a five mile radius.
  • While this is a definite struggle, when an indecisive person finally does make a decision there is no second-guessing. If we have come to any conclusion it was carefully thought about and contemplated thoroughly.
  • This of course applies to people too. Scary I know. So…if you have a friend that is indecisive, you should be ready to keep them forever. Chances are you are one of the only things they will ever be 110% sure about.
