Embrace the Barre With Modern Barre!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Last Friday, Her Campus BC was invited to try out Modern Barre – the latest addition to the Chestnut Hill fitness scene. Seven of us donned our workout gear and hiked up the Comm. Ave hill for a 12 p.m. class. We arrived early to fill out our new client forms and familiarize ourselves with the studio. Not one of us had prior barre experience, so we had no idea what to expect.

The second we walked through the door, owner Julia Williamson made us feel right at home. Her energy was contagious and her genuine enthusiasm was beyond motivating. After talking a bit about the class (and our shared love of lulu lemon), we got right to it. We were each given our own “cubby” to keep our personal items in, and all of the mats were already arranged in perfect symmetry on the floor. Julia gave a brief overview of how the class would proceed: starting on the mat, moving to the ballet barre, and ending on the mat. We were ready to begin.

An energetic and fun soundtrack propelled the class. Julia’s dance background shined through as she guided us through movements linked to the beat, snapping her fingers to keep us in tempo. The class was a challenge, but in a good way. We were shaking, sweating, and hydrating up a storm. The hour flew by and before we knew it, we were cooling down and getting ready for relaxation. Yep, you read that right… relaxation. Five minutes of pure serenity complete with calming music and lavender oil. So if you are ever feeling stressed (which is pretty much a constant, everyday state in college), definitely head over to Modern Barre. It will do you wonders.

All the HC BC attendees LOVED the experience. Here are just some of the amazing things they had to say about the experience:

“I loved trying barre fitness! The workout is so much fun and I’m definitely planning on going again!” – Niloufar Abae

“I absolutely loved the Modern Barre class! The instructor Julia was really motivating throughout the entire class and made sure we were comfortable with the moves. It was a great workout that stretches muscles I didn’t even know existed. I definitely will be going back soon!” – Meghan Gibbons

“I loved the class. I was an avid dancer for most of my life and although the class reminded me that I am not as flexible as I used to be, it reminded me in some ways of how much I love the barre! I am definitely going to take more classes. Julia had each of us push ourselves as much as we could and in a small studio she offered all of us the personal attention one deserves in the class. I left the class feeling really good about myself!” – Morgan Gibbons

“Modern barre is a fun way to workout. The instructor Julia keeps you motivated with her energetic spirit throughout the class.” – Alana Dolan
