Confessions of a Short Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Hilary Duff, Eva Longoria, Kourtney Kardashian, Hayden Panettiere, Natalie Portman, Kristen Belle, the Olsen Twins, Nicki Minaj… Me.  What do we all have in common?  We’re short and we’re proud of it.  The life of a short girl gets really interesting, and I’m here to tell you all about it.  If you are a proud 5’3’’ or shorter, you’ve most likely had most of these experiences.  For those of you tall folk, just read and enjoy.  Just a warning:  you may get a little jealous of all the fun things us short people get to do.

  • We can wear heels anytime and anywhere.  We never have the feeling that we’re towering over people. We simply feel average (in height) and adorable (in style).

  • We have no trouble on planes, in cars, or walking under trees with low branches.  We are petite and fit anywhere.  We can walk without having to duck.  Ever.

  • We don’t like to study in O’Neill library because when we sit on the chairs, our legs don’t touch the ground (Says Pauline, 4’ 11’’).

  • We have trouble reaching high things.  For example, we can’t put clothes on the top bar of our closet because we can’t reach up there without standing on a chair.  We also have trouble reaching Franzia when
it’s on the top shelf of liquor stores.  But instead of giving up, we ask men to reach these things for us.  It’s the perfect way to get a man’s attention.

  • Speaking of men, we never have to worry about finding a man who’s taller than us because they all are.  The options are endless.

  • Our necks starts to hurt on a daily basis because we are constantly staring up at the tall people around us in order to talk to them.

  • We’re the perfect size for hugs.  You can rest your head right on top of ours as we nuzzle our head into your bosom.

  • When we’re buying pants, we have trouble finding stores that sell pants for short people.  And to top it all off, the short sizes aren’t short enough!

  • And let me ask you a question: why in the world would stores put the smallest size pants on the top shelf? They must know we can’t reach up there.

  • We have lots of options when we are planning outfits.  Our shirts can serve as shirts AND dresses. Jealous?
    I know.

  • We get way more exercise than the average person because we have to walk and run twice as fast just to keep up.

  • When tables are too high for us, we don’t only sit on a chair but we sit on a stack of books on a chair.

  • Make sure you bring 3 back-ups when you go out because no one is actually going to believe that you’re 21.  And be prepared to smile when the man at the liquor store checks to make sure your ID matches your face.

  • We are typically chosen as the one to pick things up from the ground when someone drops something.  We’re closer to the ground, after all.

  • We can still shop in the children’s section.  But hey, kids clothes are way cheaper than adult clothes.

  • When we’re standing in a crowd at a concert or sitting in a crowded movie theater, we need to be in the front row, otherwise all we see is the back of people’s heads.

  • We make the perfect armrest.

Being short is nothing to be ashamed of– it’s something to celebrate!  Where are my short girls at?!
