As a junior in college, I have an apartment for the first time! Having an apartment is amazing for so many reasons. But one of the best and worst parts about having an apartment is having a kitchen. Even though I love having a kitchen and being able to make my own food, it’s so hard to keep the kitchen well stocked with just the right things. From my experiences grocery shopping this year, I’ve compiled a list of tips to remember when you go to the store. Check out some of these ways to make your food last and to make sure you’ve got all the bases covered.

1. Always remember the essentials

When I go to the grocery store, I make sure I always have eggs, milk, and bread. With these three essential items, you’ve got a lot of good starting places for your meals for the week. If you remember nothing else, these are the things to make sure are in your shopping basket.

2. Don’t buy too much

I’ve learned the hard way how easy it is to buy a bunch of fruits and vegetables and forget to eat them in a timely manner. Produce goes bad VERY quickly, so don’t buy too much that you end up having to throw most of it away.

3. Plan ahead for the week

When grocery shopping, always make sure you have enough ingredients to make breakfast/lunch/dinner for the whole week. You don’t want to have to go back to the grocery store after just a few days because you ran out of things to make for dinner. Or, looking at it from the other way, if you know you’ll be eating out a lot that week then you don’t want to buy so much food that it ends up going to waste. Planning ahead is SUPER important!

4. Make sure you get a good variety of items

You don’t want to get sick of the food you have after just a couple of days. To avoid this, make sure you’re getting a nice little assortment of food. Protein, veggies, snack food, fruit, chips, yogurt, etc. Get creative!

5. Think about household items

Grocery stores have cleaning, organizational, and other items that you may need for everyday life and for maintaining your apartment. So before going to the store, always check your apartment to see if you need paper towels, dish soap, laundry detergent, etc.

6. Don’t forget to treat yourself

I never leave the grocery store without getting myself some sort of treat to get me through the week. Ice cream? Candy? It’s always a good idea.

Hopefully, these tips will help you know what to get on your next grocery shopping trip!
