Borrowing from the Boys: What to Steal from Your Boyfriend’s Closet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Now that your boyfriend is dressing like a fashionista, it’s time to treat yourself to some new items!  And since your man just got a bunch of great new pieces, why not look through his closet for a few articles that can transition into some fun and flirty looks for you?

The first item you might want to snag is one of your boyfriend’s classic oxford shirts.  Oxfords are extremely versatile and great for layering, especially now that we are in the colder fall weather.  Try tucking his shirt loosely into a pair of seasonal colored jeans, like an oxblood tone, one of the trendiest colors this season. You can also try wearing it as a shirt-dress over a pair of leggings, cinched at the waist with a cool belt. Add a statement necklace to finish off this look, or a chunky scarf on cooler days.

As you already know, I’m a sucker for a good tie.  Accessorizing a woman’s outfit with a killer tie adds a touch of sophistication and can give off a sexy schoolgirl vibe without being inappropriate.  Bowties can add the cute factor to an ensemble too, but don’t be afraid to mix it up by throwing one in your hair instead of around your neck.  Fasten the tie to the back of a half-up, half-down using bobby pins.

Don’t forget to raid your boyfriend’s jewelry box too.  Even though it may be a little big for you, your sweetie’s watch can add a chunky, masculine touch to even the most feminine outfit.  Layer your wrist with other bracelets and cuffs to create a perfect balance of his and hers.

Unfortunately, you can’t steal everything from your man, but you can still seek inspiration from his closet. Take a hint from men’s suits and splurge on a blazer that will add an extra dash of character to your ensemble.  Wool and cashmere blazers are hot right now and are a great investment that can be worn again and again when the temperature drops each fall.  The “Smoking Slipper” is another big trend this season that has typically been worn more by men (think Josh Flagg on Million Dollar Listing).  Seen in classic colors, animal prints, and embellished with studs, these shoes have replaced the classic ballet flat as the go-to shoe this autumn.

Borrowing from the boys can be a great way to experiment with fun clothes without running up your credit card bill.  And don’t forget, every collegiette needs a little beauty rest too.  While you’re rummaging through your boyfriend’s wardrobe, sneak a pair of comfy sweats into your bag.  Happy styling, and may the fashion odds be ever in your favor.
