BChivalry: Alive or Dead?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

“Chivalry is dead.”

It’s a matter-of-fact and sadly cynical statement that we often encounter in today’s day and age where whole relationships can take place within a virtual realm limited by 140 characters.  And yet, some of the hopeless romantics out there frown upon the naysayers with the firm belief that chivalry is alive and well.  And so we were left to wonder…is BC chivalry alive or dead?!

Here’s what BC girls had to say:

18% of BC girls think chivalry on campus is ALIVE.  Hoorah for optimism, ladies!

11% of BC girls agree with the age-old declaration: “Chivalry is DEAD.”

BUT… a whopping 71% of campus’ females believe chivalry is IN HIDING – we’d sure like to know where!

Don’t they look happy?

Now let’s find out how BC girls are defining “chivalry.”  (Boys, you may want to pay attention to these next responses…)

Here are what BC girls are calling chivalrous [ranked from highest to lowest].

When on a date, a guy should…

  1. If it’s cold, offer you his jacket. (88%)
  2. Hold the door for you. (88%)
  3. Call when he says he will call. (88%)
  4. Walk you to the door. (84%)
  5. Give up his seat for you (EX: when riding the T). (78%)
  6. Insist on paying. (69%)
  7. Drive/Pick you up. (53%)
  8. Open the car door for you. (45%)
  9. Walk on the outside of the sidewalk. (22%)
  10. Help you with your coat. (13%)
  11. Help you into your chair. (9%)
  12. Bring you flowers. (3%)
  13. Stand when you get up/return to the table. (0%)
  14. Order your meal for you. (0%)

Finally, the stat that all of our male readers have been waiting for…

100% of BC girls would be MORE inclined to date a guy if he acted chivalrously!

This guy’s got it down.
